This month we introduce you to Liphina Zondi. Liphina was the very first knitter to join our project and helped us to pioneer our first Care Bear. She has responsible for getting together our first community of knitters in the Lidgetton area and is our foremost champion knitter!Meet Liphina

Liphina is a dedicated mother as well as grandmother, providing not only for her children but also her three grandchildren. As with many families, Liphina lost her son a number of years ago and now is the sole support and carer to this grandson, as well as caring for her daughter’s two children at home, while supporting her daughter through nursing school. Liphina has only her government pension to support all six of them each month.
Talking to Liphina, we learnt that her house is rapidly deteriorating due to rainwater, to the point where she has plastic bags stuffed in the gaps between the doorframe and the wall, and around the windows. Liphina saves her money from The Care Bear Project in the hopes of building a veranda to prevent the water from seeping around and under the door and in the sides of the windows, so that her house can continue to be a home to herself, her children and grandchildren.

One complete knitting kit (6 bears) costs R400, of which R300 is paid directly to the knitter, the balance being the cost of the wool, needles, stuffing etc. Liphina would really like to knit two kits per month if we can find the sponsorship for her.
The Care Bear Project is a fully registered NPO and PBO, so all donations qualify for S18A tax certificates, and as all our beneficiaries are disadvantaged black recipients, companies can use their donations for BBEEE and CSI points. All admin staff are volunteers, and as such, we guarantee that 100% of your donation goes to the project.

The Grace College Parents’ Association recently hosted a fashion show, where the Grade 10 and 12 pupils modelled their Ball gowns and suits. To bring a surprise element to the show, the Grade 9s were asked to model their trendy fashion made from recycled material and they did not disappoint! The audience constantly gasped in surprise as, one by one, these amazing young designers stepped onto the runway to display their designs. They are commended for their excellent work.

Laddsworth First Team Soccer girls played in the Bisley Soccer Festival on Saturday, 17 September. 12 Schools took part in the festival held at Bisley Primary School. The Laddsworth team finished second place and each girl received a silver medal. Well done girls!

Mary-Lynn Cotton, a Grade 6 Pupil at Laddsworth took part in the KwaZulu-Natal Tennis Mini Series no 3 from 26-28 August 2016, which was held in Westridge Durban. Mary-Lynn won the under 12 singles and doubles categories. Well done Mary-Lynn!

Umgeni Water will be undertaking essential infrastructure maintenance, which will require a 30-hour shutdown from tomorrow, September 22 to September 23. This maintenance is to ensure security of supply into the future. A contingency plan is in place – the city’s reservoirs are currently full and, barring any unforseen contingencies, the city should have sufficient water for up to 48 hours. The Msunduzi Municipality is appealing to residents to use water conservatively and not deplete reserves unnecessarily.
Laddsworth pupils took part in the Mandela Day Marathon Events. Matthew Rawson, a Grade 1 pupil came 7th in the 21km Mountain Bike race, in the under 10 year category. James Beyrooti participated in the 10km trial ride and was placed in the top 10. Well done boys!
The Texas-based oil exploration company Rhino Resources has cut back on the scale of its proposed oil and gas exploration bid in KZN after a major public backlash. The company’s local subsidiary, Rhino Oil and Gas Exploration, lodged an exploration application early last year covering a massive 1 500 000ha chunk of the province and nearly 10 000 farms. Now the scale of its exploration bid has been reduced to 850 000 ha and about 6 700 properties in central KZN. Environmental consultants acting for the company acknowledged that there had been “extremely strong” and almost unanimous public opposition to the exploration plan, which could ultimately involve hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”). The public have now been invited to comment on the draft environmental impact studies before October 14. Six public feedback meetings have been scheduled in Richmond, Colenso, Mooi River, Howick, Greytown and Dundee from October 3 to 7.
