You may have noticed recent media reports relating to your favourite dog food brands. Testing has revealed the potential presence of a maize contaminant in certain batches produced in the month of June. Deoxynivalenol (DON) originates from a mould found on maize and is likely to result in a less appetising meal for your dog.

We understand that this will concern you, but we would like to assure you that there are no severe side effects. It is possible that your pet will either refuse to eat the food, or in the most severe case may regurgitate the food consumed.

At Foodcorp we know how much you love your pets and we are committed to ensuring that they get only the very best quality when it comes to what they eat. For this reason we are offering you the opportunity to replace your existing bag with a fresh new bag if it was produced during the month of June.

How would you know if your bag was manufactured during the month of June:

1. Check the manufacturing date on the bag itself – this will have the letters MANF, followed by the date that the bag was packed and the time of production. Please check the date carefully to see whether it was manufactured between 4th of June 2014 and the 23rd of June 2014, for example:
MANF 04/06/14 15:30 – this bag of dog food was produced on the 4th of June 2014 and should be replaced.
MANF 07/MAY/14 – this bag of dog food was produced on the 7th of May 2014. This date is before the 4th of June 2014 and so this bag of dog food will not need to be replaced.

Jackie Cameron will be leaving Hartford House at the end of July 2014.

Midlands born and raised Jackie's heart is in KwaZulu-Natal where, since 2002, she has filled the position of head chef at Hartford House, a five-star boutique hotel in rural Mooi River.

Having only recently reached 30 years old, her list of achievements is what most aspiring chefs dream of.

Jackie graduated from the Christina Martin School of Food and Wine in 2001 and cut her teeth at Mount Grace Country House and Spa. For the past 12 years she has been reaping the rewards of her commitment to her career. Under her guidance the Hartford House restaurant - having achieved national Top 10 status four times and making number five restaurant in the country in 2013 - is mentioned regularly in magazines such as Food&Home, Taste, Eat Out, and House and Leisure. It has achieved many other accolades including Top 10 Eat Out, American Express Platinum Fine Dining Programme and People's Choice awards. The latter was in the La Motte Restaurant of the Year competition. With her input, Hartford House's wine list was presented with the Inspirational Award in the Top 100 SA Short List Wine List for 2013 awards; Top 10 in the 2012 Eat Out/DStv Restaurants Awards as well as a Diamond Award for its 2012 and 2013 wine list, as recognised by Diner's Club International.

In her personal capacity Jackie has the distinction of being one of Victor Strugo's "three favourite woman chefs". She was voted by South African Tourism as one of the Top 10 Young South African Chefs, has appeared on TV programmes such as MasterChef SA, Top Billing, and with Justin Bonello in The Ultimate Braai Master. Jackie has been part of the Real Food Movement, is a Chaine des Rotisseure member, and is on the KwaZulu-Natal committee for the South Africa Chefs' Association.

Her culinary career has taken her to Germany, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Australia, England, Dubai, Shanghai, Spain, Copenhagen, Denmark and America where she has represented South Africa at exhibitions, enjoyed work experiences, or - for the benefit of her career - experienced eating in restaurants such as Nobu, Le Gravoche, Fat Duck, Gordan Ramsay's Hospital Road and River Café, Noma and El Bulli, The French Laundry, Per Se, Bochon Bistro, AD HOC, Le Bernadin and Jean Georges. She went on a trip to Thailand which was meant to be purely pleasure but resulted in a culinary extravaganza of all things unusual. Most recently she was invited by S Pellegrino and Acqua Panna to represent South Africa at the Audi Chef's Cup Südtirol 2014, in Alta Badia. This is display of culinary excellence attracts the leading personalities of national and international cuisine.

In her endeavour to share her knowledge, Jackie writes a monthly column for The Witness newspaper as well as a column in the Chef Magazine where, through her stories and her recipes, she encourages readers to experiment with food – and to enjoy culinary feasts, however simple.

Jackie leaves no stone unturned. Apart from her creative flair breaking into the world of fashion when she introduced her chic, fashionable Jackie Cameron chef's range as an alternative to conventional 'kitchen wear'; Jackie Cameron Cooks At Home, published by Penguin, hit the shelves in May 2013 and in July the same year achieved the status of second highest cookbook sold in the country as voted by Exclusive Books. Most recently this book won Best Woman Chef Book in South Africa as voted by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

Hilton based couple, Ski and Melissa Vurovecz enjoyed their day at the Durban July 2014 raceday. Melissa is a top 24 finalist in the Mrs SA 2014 and also the sole entrant still in the running for KZN. Hilton is exceedingly proud of Melissa's achievements!

Laddsworth Grade 6 pupils progressed from making their own bread for a gourmet sandwich in Round 1 to a fun egg whisking and potato peeling session. The more determined chefs participated in a cook-off for the finale.

To earn the coveted MasterChef apron nine semi-finalists had to use four basic ingredients and add not more than five additional ones to cook a starter from scratch. After just 20 minutes, their plates were filled with surprisingly accomplished results.

The two runners up were Gemma Hickinbotham and Nick Allen. Prianna Maharaj, who made a couscous chicken salad served in a green pepper was chosen as the overall winner of MasterChef 2014.

There was no normal tabs-in bowls on Tuesday to allow the clubhouse and green to be used for the bowls clinic which was run by the District standing Committee for Coaches. The clinic was well-received and we hope to see some benefits from it on our green in the future. Grateful thanks to the coaches for affording us this opportunity.

The Jaxx Roll on Wednesday was won by John Arnott, John Fowler and Anton Leisegang and the Dulce's vouchers were won by Peter Baillie and Jean and Rob Tosen. On Thursday the Lindsay's competition was won by Chris Lake, Bill McQuade and Pat Bennett. A reminder that on Thursday 26th June we will be playing for prizes sponsored by Lister and Lister.

On Saturday the Men's third league side and the ladies played their last league matches of the season against Umngeni and the West respectively. Unfortunately all the teams lost but all the players had a very good afternoon. Our congratulations to the ladies from West for not dropping a single game in the whole season. The men's fourth league side will play their last match on Saturday 28th June.

The Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy will be holding its annual Ashburton Aloe Festival over the weekend of the 5th and 6th July. The festival is timed to coincide with the flowering of the magnificent Aloe candelabra which put on a majestic display in this beautiful bushveld area just east of Pietermaritzburg.

Our line-up of expert talks include Steve Woodall "Planting for Butterflies", Sithembiso Sangweni "Guided walk and talk on alien invasive weed eradication", Nick May "A Living Geology", Howard Bradshaw "Stories of Herman Charles Bosman" Pandora Long & Catherine Fennel P.E.A.C.E. Project Permaculture Production Garden "Story of a Garden" Granton Law "For the Love of Indigenous Plants" and Pat McKrill "Getting to know the Neighbours" See the full programme hereunder for details.

• Venue 1 Galago Farm Pandora Long will host the conservancy tea garden under the sweet thorn trees alongside the Mpushini River. BotSoc speaker Steve Woodhall will be sharing his facinating talk, "Planting for Butterflies" at Galago on Saturday 5th July at 10am. Visitors can walk and talk with Sithembiso Sangweni about the problem of alien invasives and view the eradication clearing work that is being undertaken here in the riverine area. Visitors can enjoy two self-guided trails, the special 'Euphorbia trail' a circular 1 hour moderate walk and Tufty's trail, a short loop of under 30min or link to Toprock. Galago will be hosting 'Art under the Trees' and a campfire from 4pm on Saturday with Howard Bradshaw's "Stories of Herman Charles Bosman". On Sunday morning at 10am Pandora Long will introduce the Galago Centre for P.E.A.C.E. Project and Catherine Fennell will present "The Story of a Garden".

• Venue 2 Toprock Museum Nick and Nicole May will open their Palaeontology Museum and Minerals, Crystals and Gemstone Shop where you will see one of the largest collections of fossils and minerals in the world! There will be a feast of arts and crafts stalls, live music with Paul and students from Marshall's music and fire dancing. Also at Venue 2, Bill and Pam Kelland of Bundu Bistro will serve breakfast, lunch and refreshments from the beautiful rustic African style restaurant deck set right into the heart of the bushveld. Here Nick May will give an exciting talk "A Living Geology" on Saturday 5th July at 2pm.

• Venue 3 At Impala Bend hosts, Keith and Kathy Brown will serve their delicious festival light lunches and drinks from the game viewing deck at 'The Waterhole' accompanied by light music. Indigenous Plant guru, Granton Law of Valea-Vista Indigenous Nursery will be at Impala Bend with his warm smile and excellent selection of indigenous plants. On Sunday 6th at 12 noon, Granton will share a talk "For the Love of Indigenous Plants" with festival visitors and at 2pm snake expert Pat McKrill will present his talk "Getting to Know the Neighbours!". This venue also hosts stalls, African craft and two self guided walking trail with an amazing view through the most beautiful Aloe candelabra country! On Saturday Ponys4parties will offer pony rides at Impala Bend.

• Venue 4 Rocky Wonder Aloe Nursery - Here, the new owners Peter and Heather Poulsen will welcome you to this beautiful farm with over 200 African Aloes on display in the specially created feature rockery overlooking the valley. A large variety of indigenous aloe species are available for sale at special festival prices!

• At Venue 5 Spencers Place, a self-guided birding trail through the fully flowering Aloes opens from 6am.

The Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy is home to a wide variety of animal, bird and insect life and consists largely of pristine Eastern valley Bushveld with high biodiversity and a number of protected species. The area is also one of the butterfly "hotspots" where numerous species of these beautiful creatures can be seen. Long term conservation efforts have been very successful and the area was proclaimed a Protected Environment under the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Stewardship Programme in February 2011, the first such community Protected Area in KZN. The Lower Mpushini Valley forms part of a Biosphere Conservation Corridor Initiative for the Eastern Periphery of Pietermaritzburg. All funds raised go towards the conservation of this last bit of 'Wild Africa'.

To find the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy take the N3 exit 69 at Ashburton, turn right toward Ashburton East for 5km and follow the signs.

Once again the weather chased people away, and only 7 stalwarts braved the elements to enjoy a game of bowls. Things were much brighter when we gathered on Saturday morning to play for the Harry Cooper Trophy.

Winners were John Pattrick, Dave Stevenson and Ingrid Oellermann. Winners of the losers were George Oldham, Margie Garrard and Andy Hitchcock. Fred Palmer and his team received a consolation prize after coming second overall.

Many thanks to Una Watson and Margaret Lake for setting out the lovely lunch and supervising the cleaning up. Thanks too to Quarry Spar for the lunch and very generous vouchers presented to the winners.

WINTER BLUES? And other ailments peculiar to winter

Winter is a time of cold, bleak,stark and dark times and sometimes this translates into either SAD – seasonal affective disorder or seasonal depression. This is more common in countries where winter is harsher and more punishing than south africa. It boils down to feeling bleak with symptoms like insomnia, over or undereating, sadness to the point of uncontrollable emotion and feeling down, lowered immunity (at a time you can least afford it), losing the plot slightly in the motivation department as well as generally feeling fatigued. There is a spectrum of disease for any ailment and perhaps you are only just entering the spectrum, it may still be worth getting checked out.

Dry skin is possibly the most incovenient of all the "minor" winter irritations. You may even mistakenly think you have a skin condition. It is really important to keep your largest organ happy by moisturising, using baby oil in bath/shower or finding a product like skinworx skinbalm to get you through the wintery-raw-hide time.

Asthma can be triggered by the weather but also after having a chest infection. If you continue to cough protractedly you may need to have the "asthma" treated for a period of time in order to resolve the cough. In my personal opinion most cough mixtures treat symptoms but not causes and if your cough mooty has not resolved your cough within 5 days think about trying to treat the cause.

Staying healthy can be most challening at this nasty nippy time. My newest efficacious remedy/preventative mooty is Echinacea forte which has efficacy against both bacterial and viral bugs and certainly is able to give you the boost you need to fight off the lurgies.

One of our Winterskloof Conservancy members was distraught recently to see a resident of our Valley walk out of the Spar with an armful of Rattex. The use of this poison has consequences, which we all need to understand, so we can make informed decisions for the sustainability of the wildlife in our Valley.

A food chain is a system where a small creature is the food for a larger one which, in turn, is the food for an even larger animal. Owls and raptors are perched on top of their food chains and we are privileged to have many in the Winterskloof Valley. One of our Valley families has even become an owl rehabilitator, looking after injured birds until they are able to fend for themselves and be released. It will be devastating if the use of poisons (for snails, rats, etc) kills off these beautiful owls that have been given a second chance in life. We cherish their nocturnal calls as they do their rodent control work for us, free of charge!

Many people don't realise that when an owl or other predator eats a poisoned rodent, that animal gets poisoned too. These poisons are killing the very animals, like the Barn Owl, that naturally control rodents. For owls to survive, there needs to be enough food (rats and mice) for them to eat. This means that there will be these essential creatures in the food chain. We do need to keep them out of our houses, but shockingly, over 86% of all tested wildlife patients show evidence of exposure to rat poisons! These animals are eating poisoned rodents and carrying varying loads of toxic poison in their systems and those of their chicks, as a result.

Rat poisons kill by making whatever animal eats them bleed to death internally – slowly and painfully over a period of days. While the poisoned rats or mice are still alive, they (and their deadly load of poison) can be caught more easily and consumed by other predators including owls, cats and dogs. Rodents are the basic food source for a number of different predators all the way up the food chain, including owls, buzzards, eagles, genets and caracal (rooikat) in our area. It is a terrifying prospect; to kill many animals while targeting only one! As top or apex predators, the presence or absence of raptors (including owls) from an area can tell us how healthy the environment is. If raptors are rare or absent it means that the balance of nature has been disturbed.

South Africa has 12 owl species varying in size from the tiny Pearl-spotted Owlet to the imposing Verreaux's Eagle-Owl (previously called a Spotted Eagle-Owl). Owls are found in many habitats, from bushveld to grasslands, on cliff-faces, along river-banks and in our cities. There are fewer owls and other raptors in the Valley each year, not from the lack of habitat or food, but from the widespread and improper use of poison bait in misguided attempts to control rats. Rat poison is having dangerous and detrimental effects on the wildlife in our area. We need to find better ways to live well with wildlife.

Please STOP using rat poisons as they are doing more harm than good. So what CAN we do to keep control these creatures that cause damage when they choose to live in our houses instead of our gardens?

Ben Hoffman, from the Raptor Rescue Centre advocates the use of the Rat Zapper, which resident Sharon Gilbert has bought and safely set up. It provides a lethal shock when a rat or mouse enters the trap. There are no poisons used and thus will not affect other creatures that may eat the dead mouse or rat.

What a pleasure to have an environmentally responsible alternative to controlling the rodents that may be wreaking havoc in our ceilings!

Among the three visitors who played with us on Tuesday was one from Sydney in Australia who reiterated what we have heard from others who have played down-under. The greens there are like lightning compared to ours. The visitors however enjoyed their afternoon with us and we look forward to seeing more bowlers coming to share time with us in Hilton.

Lister and Lister donated chickens for the winners on Thursday, who were Chris Purchase, Dave Hammond and Judie Ashmole. Jean Pluke won a box of chocolates for scoring six touchers. Well done and thanks to Richard.

Rain on Friday seemed to threaten play on Saturday, but by 11:00 the sun had appeared and players began to arrive. The men's fourth league team played their last match of the season against Umgeni Waterfall. Chris Lake and his team won by 16 shots, while the other team lost by two. This meant that Hilton won the match.

There will be a Chicken Run on 5th July and the IF Trips competition takes place on Friday 4th July. Skips must please confirm participation of their teams with Dave Garrard by Wednesday.

The Quarry Spar Harry Cooper Cup will be played for on 12th July. The entry form is on the notice board.

It's ON again! Tuesday, the 1st of July saw the re-launch of an exciting and unique campaign aimed at raising funds for Wildlands' Rhino conservation projects. The campaign will see R5 donated to the Wildlands Conservation Trust for every breakfast sold at JAXX Restaurant (Hilton Quarry Shopping Centre) from the 1st of July – 15th of July 2014. The breakfast customers will also have the opportunity to match the JAXX donation with a R5 personal contribution to anti-poaching efforts in KwaZulu – Natal.

At this time of year it is actually very difficult to dodge the bugs. The big question is do you need an antibiotic or not.

How do you answer that question for yourself and possibly save yourself the fee of a doctors consult.

If you have serious body ache with fevers (hot and cold) and only mild nose and throat symptoms you in all liklihood have a VIRUS and in all liklihood the influenza virus which can resond to an ANTIVIRAL (Tamiflu) if caught within the first 48 hours.

If you have blocked nasal passages with thick gloop and are coughing up gloopy stuff you more likely require an antibiotic. Some throat infections do as well. There are other infections like middle-ear, chest and skin infections that require antibiotics.

If you have mainly a head "cold" so runny but clear nose and headache this is a common cold and there is no medication that your doctor can give you to fix this. This is where the lemon and honey (with a little brandy) comes in handy.

A top tip to arm yourself for winter is Echinacea Forte tablets both as prevention and cure for viral as well as bacterial infections.

A healthy immune system requires minimal stress, enough (8 hours) of sleep, good nutrition (less sugar) and peace in the home.

This is a timely reminder that fire season is well underway, so please do not light fires until we get our first spring rains and the risk is sufficiently lowered. If you need to deal with leaves and other garden waste, why not use the opportunity to make a compost heap or use a chipper to make mulch for your flower beds, which retains the moisture and warmth to protect plants during winter.

As we all know, fires emit smoke with hazardous particulates that make breathing difficult for those with asthma or any other respiratory problems. It also releases carbon which adds to greenhouse gas levels, implicated in Global Warming.

For those of us who live under thatch, it is an even more worrying time, so please spare a thought for the safety of others before deciding whether to light a fire.

This photo from today's Witness shows the fire we saw yesterday in the NCT plantation below Devonshire Lane, towards Boughton. It was quite an aerial display by the bombers and the spotter plane. The wind was very strong, hence the need for the aerial intervention.

We are particularly vulnerable in the Winterskloof Valley to the risks from fire to people and property, due to the proliferation of alien invasive plants which tend to burn hotter, the lack of water for fire-fighting and little access for fire-fighting equipment. In previous fires we found out they could not fight fires on steep slopes and that there is a lack of exit points for a mass emergency evacuation.

Hilton's Village Centre opposite the old station in Hilton Avenue has been revived, now boasting a new layout and the welcome addition of fresh tenants. These include Huddy's bookstore, Wakefields, a modern KwikSpar, TOPS liquor outlet and Rosewood, owned by local lady, Caitlyn Gilson.

The Hilton Village Centre will officially launch on Thursday evening, the 26th June 2014 with a cheese and wine evening.

Melissa Vurovecz, Hilton's Mrs SA Finalist 2014 enjoyed the TOP GEAR DURBAN FESTIVAL with her husband Ski and shared the following comment on Facebook, 'It's always good to support your spouse in their passions. My husband is so supportive of my passions that it's only a PLEASURE to return the favor! Ski is a petrol head and on the weekend we went to Top Gear Durban Festival together.
