St Anne’s Diocesan College student, Esmé Thornhill-Davis, has been selected to compete in the 2020 World Individual Public Speaking Competition in Shanghai as part of the South African team.
Households in Winterskloof, Hilton are doing what they can to compensate for non-delivery of road repairs. We appreciate the efforts of the Klein and Rautnbach families whose garden workers; Steve Zondi (pictured here LHS) and Nkululeko Zuma (RHS) began clearing drainage inlets and digging furrows today to better manage the water flow during this rainy season. This project will hopefully reduce the damaging impact of heavy water pummeling lower sections of Valley Road.
Asked about her hopes and aspirations, Andiswa said: “I aim to achieve exposure in a way that benefits me, as well as our School Restaurant - and to mature in my career. The responsibilities I have been given will help me in my endeavour to develop within the culinary industry and, one day, I hope to look back, with pride, at the people I have impacted.” Andiswa is aware of the testing time ahead.
“Challenges in a kitchen become a way of life,” she says, adding that she deals with them by telling herself that challenges come, and they go. “They are a part of life,” is her philosophical approach. Having been a student and an employee at the school, Andiswa is familiar with the ethics here.
As a teenager she waitressed, and was employed as chef de partie at Hartford House, so she is confident she will fill the position effectively.
Born in the Eastern Cape and raised primarily in KwaZulu-Natal, Andiswa has dreams of being a successful businesswoman.

I'm writing this email to you with a heavy heart and unable to hold back tears. Today's storm and heavy rain has destroyed our cabin which is used by the Grade 2.
As I write I'm standing in the ruins not knowing what to do or where to turn. I'm devastated, worried, confused and anxious as I don't know where I will put my children tomorrow.
I'm writing to you for help, I have nowhere to turn. Not only that I have to take some of the kids with me home as their shacks have been destroyed. If you can help,please,please help me.

As part of our #CommitToAct #SaveLives-SpeakUp and #SaveKidsLives campaign SADD have been funded by Community Chest and N3TC to make learners safer on the roads.
The first step was engaging with principals, assessing the roads, painting pedestrian crossings and School ahead and 40km speed limit signs were hung up around the schools. In 2020 we will work with the educators and learners, and start road safety clubs at the schools.
Thanks to donations from Clicks, N3TC, Howick Pharmacy, Kubela Store, Trucksurance and The Fabric Gallery we were able to make a small difference in the lives of 27 Road Crash Victims at Greys, Edendale and Northdale Hospitals.
Many of the victims have either no or very infrequent visitors, either have been or will be hospitalized for extended periods of time and this then made the SADD teams visit, support and the gift bag so special to them.
The majority of the victims we visited had been pedestrians walking on the verge, or drivers and passengers abiding by the road rules. Most of the crashes had been caused by other reckless and intoxicated drivers. Road conditions, e.g. gravel roads, wet roads, potholes, no pavements or lighting were other leading reasons for the crashes.
SADD would therefore like to promote the erecting of guard rails in high traffic areas and in public transport drop-off collection points. There is an ongoing need for Road Safety Awareness campaigns to be run by the Department of Transport and by other road safety specialists like SADD.
Again, we found that many passengers were not buckled up. It was difficult to correctly quantify the number of intoxicated drivers, as many victims became unconscious and did not remember specific details.
SADD were also able to hand out training manuals to doctors at the 3 Hospitals as part of our preventative and educative work.
We hope by sharing the road crash victim stories with the public we will highlight the financial and emotional devastation that crashes cause to victims and their families and how it places an unnecessary and enormous burdens on our health system.

Ryan McKean, a Grade 7 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, has been selected to represent the KwaZulu-Natal Inland Under 13B Regional Team. Laddsworth is very proud of Ryan’s achievements and wish him all the best for the upcoming tournaments in December.
Laddsworth Primary School collected toys, stationery, balls, skipping ropes and toiletries for the Siyabonga Care Centres during October.
Mrs Jackie Ponsford, a representative from Siyabonga, as well as German volunteers, Marieke Stoll and Sophie Jürgens, collected the items from Laddsworth on Wednesday, 30 October 2019.
They were overwhelmed by the generous amount of items collected. Siyabonga will distribute these items to those in need at their Care Centres.

9:20 pm The Name On The Drum / Roarke Angelbright collaboration!
The Unassuming Roadshow is a tour collaboration between Roarke Angelbright (singer-songwriter) and The Name On The Drum (Indie/folk duo). Original music focused with some unique covers thrown in. They went on an Eastern cape tour and Gauteng tour together as The Unassuming Roadshow, and now bring you the best of both these acts, as TNOTD and Roarke Angelbright combine their talents to bring the evening to what promises to be a remarkable close!
8:30 pm The Name On The Drum
“The Name On The Drum” is an alternative rock, folk and indie band that focuses on playing original music but they also insert a variety of covers into their live shows. Ranging their sound from full electric to simple acoustics, "The Name On The Drum" uses all the tools at their disposal to create a unique blend of honest, thought provoking song-writing with absorbing musical performances.
With influences that include, Rise Against, Bob Dylan, Frightened Rabbit, The National, Angus & Julia Stone and Gregory Alan Isakov, their song writing also creates awareness of current world issues.
When the band was formed in 2011 the plan was to have a different 'name on the drum' at each performance, now they simply go by "The Name On The Drum" or "TNOTD". Current performing members are brothers Ben and Nat Bruzas. Who, in July 2019 released their independently recorded and produced second EP "Souvenirs". They are based in Hillcrest and have played extensively around KZN, as well as touring Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.
7:40 Roarke Angelbright
Roarke Angelbright is a singer-songwriter from Westville. The 19-year-old solo artist puts a unique twist on his performances by using a loop station. He records backing to his songs live and on the spot. Percussion, rhythm, riffs and whatever else he needs is played, live, on one guitar, and looped to create a more full, 'band sound'. He plays a variety of unique covers and original songs. His style takes influences from folk, blues and even small elements of hip-hop in his rythmic beats - but overall it is probably best described as acoustic rock. Roarke played in the 2014 Durban International Blues Festival, at the age of 17, as well as many other venues throughout KZN. He became a solo act in the beginning of 2016 when he began singing and looping live for the first time.

Cashmere Karly is a relatively new duo comprised of Maryke Jonsson and Charles Webster. They perform a mixture of melodic rock and pop songs, with a special love for ballads that involve harmony. With songs rearranged to suit their particular blend of smooth vocals and tasteful instrumentation, Charles (guitar) and Maryke (keyboard) both sing lead and harmony to create a smooth, evocative sound that draws on a variety of inspirations from Bradley Cooper to Sarah Jarosz, Lewis Capaldi and KT Tunstall.

It's time for year end functions and Christmas parties and we are serving up great food!
This past October, Rich Wyngaard and 6 others completed an extreme cycling challenge called Everesting. In an Everesting attempt, an individual cyclist attempts to cycle the vertical metres of Mount Everest in one go. That means doing a total of 8848m total vertical elevation gain. Rich organized the event to also raise awareness about the need for quality Early Childhood Development in Sweetwaters, and the work iThemba Projects does in this regard. iThemba believes if a child in Sweetwaters (a community of 60 000 people) can get the nutrition and early childhood stimulation they need to develop in their first 1000 days, these kids will have the potential to transform their world.Since investments in ECD have massive long-term impact, these off-road cyclists with a passion for adventure were invited to push their limits to unlock the potential in thousands of lives by raising money for improving ECD in Sweetwaters with iThemba Projects by completing an everlasting challenge.
Even though he was still recovering from chicken pox, Rich, the event organizer, still participated and completed 27 hours of continuous riding, completing the 8848 vertical meters. Most of the other riders completed the height in about 20 hours, with the youngest cyclist Willie van Eck, completing in a world-class 16 hours. One rider, Ann Blewett, completed a 34 hour ride, doing over 10 500 vertical meters, setting a new ladies record. Of the 8 riders who started, 7 completed the challenge. The course was on the Hilton College Estate. Because of the extreme nature of the event, Hilton College boys did not participate, but were challenged to contribute to iThemba through a 5 mile fun run later in the term, raising 30 thousand Rand for the cause.
“A lot of people we spoke to about this event said “Oh that’s impossible, you can’t do that,” says Rich about the event. “Yet what I’ve learned is that yes, something is hard, but it’s not impossible. The limits we put on ourselves are not real. The human body is an amazing thing. It’s just a matter of mindset and saying, “I will do this and no one can stop me.”
Rich is already dreaming up his next extreme cycling event - hoping for an Everesting world record in December, or an extreme endurance ride in the new year. “I hope along with the extreme cycling events, we can also have some awareness raised about a bigger issue,” says Rich. If kids can get the foundation they need in life, the possibility of impact on their world is limitless.
