Is your child a right brain thinker?Right brain thinkers, referred to by researchers as visual-spatial learners, are very intelligent and creative thinkers whose learning ability is often misunderstood and undervalued in school because the skills that are required in order to do well, are mostly left brain sequential skills.
The right hemisphere doesn’t think or learn in the same way as the left hemisphere and, as a result, many visual spatial leaners struggle in one or more areas of the academic curriculum, usually with reading, written work and/or classroom maths and formal assessments. For many of them, the frustration and struggle of trying to think, learn and show what they know through left-brain skills, and the negative feedback they get when they don’t succeed, leads to anxiety and low self-esteem and results in them becoming withdrawn or, alternatively, being labelled “naughty” or “attention seeking” in the classroom.
The good news is that there are solutions. With your support and belief in them as learners, and your help and guidance, they can find out and understand who they are as learners. Then, working hard to embrace and use their right-brain skills when studying and doing their homework, they can develop the ability to succeed and become independent learners. To illustrate this, I share with you a testimony from the mother of a visual, spatial learner as well as some of the skills of a right brain dominant thinker. As a parent, your understanding of exactly how your child thinks and learns, and your advocacy for their way of learning, can make a huge difference in their daily lives.
