South Africa’s patient zero has been diagnosed with the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Hilton, KZN, South Africa by local GP, Dr Reed. According to neighbourhood WhatsApp groups, the patient returned from a skiing holiday in Italy on 1 March 2020 and visited Dr Reed on 3 March 2020 where swabs were taken. All reports indicate that the family's behaviour has been geared to contain the spread of the virus. We wish the patient a fast and full recovery.The practice remains open but Dr Reed is still in isolation and doing well with no signs of the virus. Dr Stewart is away on leave and Dr Bruce is available for consultations.
Craig Millar, a local DA councillor cautioned the community to remain calm, ‘As many residents would have heard, there has been a case of COVID19 diagnosed in Hilton. I would like to appeal to residents to remain calm and take note of some very good information from the Western Cape Provincial Government website, particularly those pertaining to prevention. Any information I get from the relevant authorities will be passed on via the numerous social media channels we subscribe to locally.’
