St Anne’s Hockey Teams on a winning streak

Daniella Rhodes Striker of the Tournament 002The St Anne’s hockey girls are enjoying superb form this season with all teams currently unbeaten in the local league. The 1st Team travelled to Gauteng in the April holidays where they gave an outstanding performance at the St Mary’s Waverley Tournament, up against 32 top schools from around Southern Africa. St Anne’s made it through to the finals, their highest achievement at the tournament to date, where they were beaten 3-1 by forth-time reigning champions, Meisieskool Oranje . Daniella Rhodes was named one of the Strikers of the tournament and Brady Wiseman as a Defender of the tournament. They went on to participate in the Saints Festival and won all of their matches. Also in the school holidays, both the U14A and U16A Teams won their age group categories at the tournament they played in Bloemfontein. The St Anne’s Sports Department introduced a High Performance Programme this year which has been embraced by the girls and their hard work appears to be paying off on the hockey field.

Grace College pupils visit Christian Life Academy

outreach tabitha web grace collegeEight Grade 8 pupils from Grace College visited Tabitha Ministries School, Christian Life Academy, where they read to the pupils, played sport with the pupils and helped with deconstructing an old carport. This cleared a space for future development of the facilities.
 
Our students enjoyed the reading experience; Adam Mohamed shared loads of information about sharks following on from the book he read. Kezia Philip took notable delight in a game of Frisbee rounders with Grade 3, 4 and 5 children.
 
We’d like to thank Eric Khumalo for the opportunity to spend valuable time with your pupils.

Family Lawyer honoured by her St Anne's Alumnae

St annesThe St Anne’s Old Girls’ Guild recently honoured one of their remarkable Old Girls by presenting Susan Abro (Class of 1981) with The Award of Excellence.
 
This award is presented to an Old Girl who models determination, success and excellence in her chosen field of endeavour and Susan certainly fulfils all these criteria.
 
Susan has always been passionate about her career and is highly regarded as an authority in Family Law where she has focused on the rights of women and children.
 
She is an international specialist on Family Law matters and has worked worldwide, mostly in connection with Hague Convention Applications, centering on the abduction of minor children.
 
She was the first woman vice-president of the KZN Law Society, is a member of the Law Society of South Africa, and the Chairperson of the Family Law Committee of South Africa.
 
Susan has been involved with the introduction of addressing Parliament in respect of numerous pieces of draft legislation, mostly with regard to the rights of women and children.
 
Her involvement with training and preparation of Arbitration in Family Law matters in South Africa, led to her meeting the Deputy Minister of Justice in October 2016 to persuade him to amend the Law and allow for Arbitration in Family Law matters in South Africa, which it currently does not.
 
The outstanding accolade of being named South Africa’s Family Lawyer of the Year for 2016 is a credit to her integrity, dedication and skill. Susan’s firm was also recently named the South African Boutique Family Law Firm of the Year for 2017.
She is an incredible role model who has forged her way through commitment to her chosen career and the community she has served.
 
The St Anne’s girls were delighted to be addressed by Susan and to hear her advice and insight into pursuing a career in Law as well as a few light hearted stories of her time at St Anne's.

Pruning 2017 with Tanglewood Nursery

This newsletter will hopefully provide you with some guidelines on how to prune your fuchsias, roses, berries and other plants. Pruning is meant to be done when the weather gets cooler, but as I write this, it has been a hot, dry day with temperatures in the early 30◦C’s. Some of our garden fuchsias are having another flush of blooms. But the cooler weather is close and then we can do some pruning ...
 
PRUNING FUCHSIAS
Seasoned gardeners will tell you that the time to prune your fuchsias (and your roses) are the months with a “J” in them, i.e. January, June and July. Those old gardeners are quite correct, but to me this is a flexible guide and should be adapted to the area you live in and also the seasonal changes, taking into account global warming effects on the temperatures.
So what happens in January? Your fuchsias, if you’ve cared for them properly, should have flowered from the end of September to December. By January they may be getting a bit leggy with a few flowers at the ends. It is time for a HALF prune to promote a second flush of flowers. How much to cut back? The plant will tell you where to cut back to. Prune back the branches by about 30% to a new shoot. These shoots are just waiting to grow and flower. As soon as you remove the ends of the branches, the energy will be redirected to these young shoots. With a boost of feeding these young shoots will provide you with a second flush of flowers until at least Autumn. It is always good to remind ourselves that fuchsias flower on new growth. So promoting new, healthy growth on your plants is the aim.
Let’s now get to the main prune (June and July). Why do fuchsias (like many other plants) need a winter pruning? There are a number of reasons, viz :
1. to remove dead and diseased growth,
2. to remove weak branches,
3. to shape the plant,
4. to promote strong growth,
5. to promote flowering, and
6. to re-direct the plant’s “energy” to the most beneficial areas.
 
Your winter pruning could start as early as May or as late as the end of July to August, depending on how cold the Winter is in your area. Pruning in May will give you a chance of earlier flowering, but also the possibility of Uncle Jack Frost damaging those young shoots! Hopefully this Winter will be a mild one!
 
So how to prune? I like to take a good look at a plant and see which branches are the strong ones and those that are weak or dead. Using sharpened and disinfected pruning shears, remove all the dead and weak branches. The next step is to cut back the sturdy, last season’s branches by ½ to ⅔’s. Cut just above a node, about 10mm, with a clean right angled cut. It is best to prune to about 2 nodes above the old growth. Pruning into the old wood may cause that particular branch to die back. Remove any remaining leaves that may be harbouring any bugs or diseases.
 
Garden plants should now be well watered. Next add a 25cm layer of compost around the base, two handfuls of mature chicken manure and then cover with a layer of mulch, eg coarse pine bark, hay etc. Then give a good watering again. This gives the roots constant, slow-release nutrition, keeps them warm in Winter and cool in Summer. It is not necessary to loosen the soil around the plants as the worms will do this for you as they feed off the organic material. In addition, the mulch will give a good control over weed growth.
 
For those plants in pots, hold the pot on its side and scrape off some of the top of the potting mix. Take care not to damage those fragile surface feeder roots. Now top-dress with a mixture of potting mix, compost and chicken manure (proportion 4:4:2). Water, but take care not to over-water at this stage.
 
If your plant is still in its first season, and there has not been much growth, then pruning back 2/3 of the growth may be a bit drastic. In such a case, do a light pruning.
If nature works with you, the new growth will start to show in about 2 – 3 weeks time.
 
Root pruning
It is good practice to check the root health of potted plants at pruning time. Place your hand on top of the pot and turn it upside down. Firmly tap the pot on the edge of a table and it should pop off. You can now examine the root system.
If all looks in good shape and some healthy white roots are visible, replace into the same pot.
If there are a great number of matted roots, and particularly if they are circling the pot – it is time to root prune. Remove the old roots at the base, but leave the root ball beneath and around the main stem intact. Re-pot into a new pot with a mixture of compost and potting mix.
Take care after root pruning and re-potting, not to over-water or fertilise the plant. At this stage there are no leaves to make use of the fertiliser and the plant may die as a result.
My experience is that it is best to let the roots be. We have plants that have been in 25 cm pots for over 15 years without root pruning and are still perfectly healthy.
Let your motto be “If in doubt, prune – but not the roots”.
 
PRUNING ROSES
The same principles apply to pruning roses. Roses, however, prefer to be pruned slightly later in the season – about July. But a couple of weeks either side will not make too much difference.
Hybrid-T roses generally prefer the traditional process, as set out above. Floribundas and related types are more forgiving. These can be trimmed and shaped even using some hedge clippers.
With garden roses don’t worry about outward facing bud-eyes and five leaflet leaf sets. Just prune to strong, healthy growth at your desired height. And if you don’t know what a five leaflet leaf set or bud-eye is, don’t worry about it.
Pruning isn’t just for “pruning season”. Feel free to shape your roses all season long like you would any other plant in your garden. While you are deadheading is a great time! You may make a few mistakes, but never fear, it will grow back!
Mulch your roses as discussed for the fuchsias. The only difference being that with roses it is important to aerate the soil around the plants. This is particularly important in areas with “heavy” soils. Loosen the soil around the plants to a full fork length.
Spraying with a lime sulphur solution after pruning will help in keeping your roses healthy. Sealing the pruned ends with a sealant can be beneficial, if you have the time and patience. But if you don’t have either – don’t worry!
 
OTHER PLANTS
 
BERRIES :
For those who have reaped the benefit of growing your own nutritious berries, they can be pruned in about June. Raspberries and youngberries will benefit if you cut them back to old stems at ground level and then mulch them with ample compost. Our raspberries are still producing berries for us for breakfast and should continue for another six weeks or so. Young suckers can be transplanted to new areas.
The same applies to blueberries where the old stems are cut back.
With gooseberries, pruning is optional. If the plant is getting too wide for its allocated area, then give it a trim. Otherwise you can let it keep on flowering and providing you with free berries.
 
HYDRANGEAS :
These can be pruned in about July. There are two chains of thought with regard to pruning hydrangeas. The one is cutting back all the stems quite hard, whereas the other is cutting back only the stems that have flowered down to a healthy new shoot. If your plants are getting sufficient sunshine they will be okay, but if they are in the shade then you may only get a few blooms late in the season.
With the latter option, you should get your first flush of flowers in December (giving them the name of “Christmas roses”) and the second flush in about March. So you choose which is the best for your garden, or do some experimenting.
 
BULBOUS PLANTS :
Normally bulbous plants shouldn’t be cut back while the stems are still green. All the goodness in the stem needs to be absorbed back in to the bulb. The dried stems can be cut off to neaten the dormant bulb, or just left as natural mulch. My favourite super-food herb, the turmeric, is a typical example of this. Turmeric goes dormant quite late in the season, when it is time to harvest the matured tubers.
 
GENERAL:
We have all you need for your mulching – compost, mature chicken manure and coarse pine bark.

Local human rights lawyer, Ilan Lax, graces the MiTH stage once again. This time it's just Ilan and his guitar, doing a unique mixture of blues and folk. Major influences include CSNY, John Martyn, (many old blues legends) Marley, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, etc. More recent favourites of Ilan's are Ben Harper, Dave Mathews and Norah Jones. Says Ilan: "I have been a singer and songwriter for more years than I can remember. Music was around me in my mother’s womb and remains a mainstay and fundamental component contributing to my life-force. I write songs that reflect the many facets of my life experience, from love and family to work, the world around me and the things that move me – in the words of Douglas Adams: “Life, the Universe and Everything."

Freaky Lizards are a fresh out of the box three-piece band from Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal, and are ready and eager to take to the stage. The band consists of Warrick Lunn of the Super Llama fame on guitar and vocals, Cuan Stretch on bass and Jarryd Lunn on drums. With their debut a year ago, the handsome band have done nothing but impress audience members in and around PMB. St Anne’s Athlete ranked 20th in the world

Busi Thwala Jessica Bompas and Nobuhle Moyana 002Jessica Bompas, a Grade 10 pupil at St Anne’s Diocesan College, is currently ranked 20th in the world for the 200m distance, in the U18 age group category. Jessica competed during the April school holidays and won the 200m U17 race and set the fastest time for the season in KZN out of all athletes including seniors. She ran 24.02, narrowly missing the SA record of 24.00 seconds. She also came 3rd in the 100m U17 race. In Cape Town she ran in the U18 division and was beaten by 2 older girls to come 3rd in the 200m and 3rd again in the 100m. She was visited at school by Busi Thwala (Department of Sports and Recreation) and Nobuhle Moyana (Department of Education) who presented her with a trophy and certificate from SASA (South African Schools Athletics) in recognition of her achievements. Jessica has been considered for the National Team to represent South Africa at the African Youth Games and World Youth Games which will be held in Bata and Kenya during June 2017. We wish her luck with the selection.

Durban based singer, pianist and songwriter, Chloe Clark, moved to Durban from her little farm town, Weenen and enrolled at the University of KwaZulu Natal where she studied music full-time and graduated with a BA Music degree in 2013. Not only is Chloe Clark a well-known Durban performer and MC, but she garnered national attention in 2014 when she made it to the Top 30 of Idols SA. You may also have seen Chloe singing backing vocals for Ronan Keating at the Star Light Pop Orchestra in 2015. Chloe has upped her game since, completing her honours in vocal technique and jazz vocal performance at the end of last year and more recently wowing viewers of The Voice. In her Blind Audition, Chloe gave a charming jazz interpretation of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”, which prompted coaches Bobby and Kahn (Kahn Morbee, frontman of The Parlotones) to woo her into their teams.

Comprised of five gifted souls Many Moore, though reluctant to categorize our music, we see “Urban Poetic Soul” as by far the most fitting label for our craft. Through harmonies, lyrics and sound we tell our stories. We have Andile “The Maestro” Sikhakhana who charms the ears with guitar and vocals; Lindani “Master Lee” Dlalisa with his flawless vocal aerobics has a rare gift and guitar player, Thulani “Headship” Ngcobo is a creator, sound pilot and the brains behind a lot of the words you hear - occasionally he hits a note or two; Fiona-Donna “The First Lady” Young adds a very Jazzy element with her evolving scatting skills and feels most comfortable existing in an unconventional space, Lastly Buthelezi is the newest member of Many Moore - he’s a djembe and congo drum player extraordinaire.

DON’T MiTH THE MICHAELHOUSE MUSIC FESTIVAL

serrotone2The third edition of the annual Michaelhouse Music Festival is set to take place 27-30 April, 2017. A new addition to the festival this year is a hospitality tent being hosted by Music in The Hills (MiTH). MiTH has become a favourite venue for music aficionados and performers alike, and for this weekend will move from its usual home at The Knoll in Hilton to the majestc grounds of Michaelhouse School in Balgowan.
 
The tent will feature a continuous flow of live music – from open mic artists, novices and soloists to professionals and bigger rock bands - at no charge. It will also provide a spot for patrons of the festival to relax and listen to live music while enjoying a refreshment between other shows. Tickets for paid shows at the festival can be purchased at Ticket Hut. Entrance to the school, and to the MiTH tent, is free. The MiTH tent line-up is as follows:
 
Saturday April 29th
• 10h00 Nishalin Pillay and Jesse Martins – a local acoustic/percussion duo featuring a mix of original and cover material.
 
• 11h00 Bianca Santoro – still in her tender teens, local talent Bianca Santoro has made a name for herself as a Midlands singer-songrwriter.
 
• 12h00 Mbijana Sibisi – Durban-based singer-songwriter Mbijana Sibisi has a haunting vocal ad delivers a treasure trove of fresh material while throwing in the odd Johnny Clegg cover.
 
• 13h00 Bowstring – this daughter-father (Charles and Rebecca Webster) duo has become known for vocal harmonies and a funky rhythm section – mix of cover and original.
 
• 14h00 Whipland Marsh – Durban-based rockers with striking vocals and plenty of attitude.
 
• 15h00 Kodiak – Pietermaritzburg-based pop-rock band lead by Dave Rossouw, whose soaring vocals deliver impressive originals and covers with finesse!
 
• 16h00 Antonio Ravell Band – lead by the man of the same name, this band is well-known all over KZN for its skilful delivery of rock songs and artful ballads.
 
• 17h00 Serrotone - Pete Guthrie, vocalist and a prolific songwriter with Spoonfeedas for 12 years has teamed up with James Robertson and close friend, superb drummer Billy Kruger. Robertson who sang and wrote material for Spoonfeedas in 2001, also went on to form Cubic Inch. Between Guthrie and Robertson they have been part of writing and performing more than 10 charting singles (including 2 no 1 singles and a handful of top 10's) on South African radio. With Spoonfeedas Guthrie has opened for artists like Muse, Velvet Revolver, Simple Plan and Metallica. He has also performed the National anthem in Christchurch NZ before a Trinations rugby test. James has opened for Bryan Adams on his SA tour with his band Cubic Inch while Billy has played with a variety of established artists at some impressive events like the Youth Day concert in Amsterdam with group MIC where they performed after Delirious at Ajax Football Stadium in front of 140 000 people. A recently added feature is the inclusion of Nick Ames who is possibly one of the finest trumpet players in South Africa. Don’t miss them.
 
• 18h00 Rusty Red Escapade - Led by Midlands guitar (and now, vocal) legend, Rusty Red (aka Luke Wyngaard) and backed by Skippy Kubheka on bass and Baviaan (Chris Melling) on drums, Rusty Red Escapade brings a gutsy blues-rock sound to the stage. The band will be performing original material from a new EP and might throw in a few covers. If you're a fan of blues, rock, and the likes of Stevie-Ray Vaughn, these chaps will please your ear greatly!

• 13h00 Cheryl Engel - Cheryl Engel is a singer/songwriter. She started singing and performing from the age of 9 and spent several years singing in studio as a session singer. Cheryl draws on her life experiences to craft poetry that forms the lyrical basis of her heartfelt and memorable songs, her style of music can be described as folk/rock with hints of country. Her style has been compared with that of Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, Civil Wars, Cranberries and Taylor Swift.
 
• 14h00 Summer du Preez - Summer du Preez is a musician based in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. She started her musical journey at MiTH, among a few other places, and it’s wonderful to welcome her back. She and her guitar capture the audience with her folk indie approach.
 
• 15h00 Pillarbox Red - Pillarbox Red is a four man band that came together to study subject music at Michaelhouse, and then discovered that when performing together, they created a unique sound that they really enjoyed. Debuting in the relatively small community that is Michaelhouse, they found that they loved performing and soon were given the opportunities to share their sound with more people. The band does covers of modern pop songs with their own little twist.
 
They draw their name from the official Michaelhouse school colour, which they decided sounds quite cool.
