Is type 1 on the rise or is it just that we are better at diagnosing it?

 

Type 1 diabetes is where your pancreas or B cells are not able to produce any insulin and thus your cells are not able to get any glucose into them and literally “starve” and are forced to metabolise other substrates in order to attempt survival. This is what causes the massive weight loss associated with initial diagnosis.

 

The anniversary for the first successful insulin being dosed was yesterday.

 

1921 – Banting and Best (accredited -though there were more people involved).Ninety six years ago. So before that if you had type 1 diabetes you would not really survive.

Now however type 1 ‘s sometimes outlive non-diabetic patients.

 

We have come a long way.

 

Is type 1 hereditary ?

In part so that is one reason why we do have an increase in type 1 diabetics. It is not the whole story.

 

However type 2 diabetes has risen out of proportion to any other chronic disease on the planet. To say it is a tsunami logarithmic disaster is to be polite about it.

Type 2 is preventable as well as treatable.

And yet! we have this huge huge burden on our health economics worldwide. Does not make sense.

So a challenge for the new year – are you on a trajectory to developing type 2 ?

You have the power to stop that.

If you are already type 2 there are so many things you can do to get better control as well as control the progression and not go onto the inevitable : insulin.

While most people were relaxing on the, 16 December, Day of Reconciliation, Hi- Q Howick owners and staff, with the help of Vinod Sookdeo and family were busy preparing to feed hungry children from the Howick area.

 

The Sookdeo family prepared biryani and High Q Howick set up a gazebo in the open space next to the library and served from there.

The local councilor was asked to bring orphans and homeless children from the area and Hi-Q expected about 150 children, they managed to feed 200. Each child received a generous portion of biryani and as much juice as they wanted.

While waiting for the food to be served, the children played soccer, with balls also provided for the occasion.

This was such a successful day that Hi-Q Howick would like to repeat it in mid February 2017.

Savanna-Belle Fyvie won the regional Liberty Drawing competition. Pupils had to draw a picture of what they want to be when they grow up. Mr Mcintosch from the Hereford Group presented Savanna with her R3000 voucher in assembly on Wednesday 7 December. Savanna’s drawing will now go forward to the National Competition. Well done Savanna!

Laddsworth Primary School Nativity play was presented to parents, grandparents and visitors from 21 to 24 November. The Nativity play was directed for the last time by Mrs Sally Kelly, who will be retiring at the end of 2016. It was wonderful to see a full house for all the performances; this definitely spurred the 240 pupils in Grades 1, 2 and 3 on to give of their best. Well done to Mrs Kelly, her team and Grade 1, 2 and 3 pupils for a very successful production of ‘”The Best Gift of All’.

Laddsworth pupils took part in the American Academy of Ballet Performance Awards on Friday 18 November in Pietermaritzburg. Amy achieved Gold in Level 4. Jessica and Jenna achieved Silver with double distinctions in Level 6.

Grace College pupil and RAM Mountaineering Brand Ambassador, Michael Van Wyngaard, completed a double Grand Traverse of the Drakensberg during the December and January holidays. Congratulations are due to Michael for succeeding in this herculean feat which required untold planning, passion, training and grit.

There was much excitement at Laddsworth Primary School on Wednesday 11 January, as the Grade One pupils arrived at school, some as early as 07:00, to start their school career. It was lovely to see that there were very few tears, more from the Moms than from the brave Grade Ones.

Laddsworth Primary School is very excited about our first full colour yearbook in the history of the school. The long awaited full colour publication was enthusiastically read by parents and pupils. Our Grade Seven pupils were especially excited to have their memories of their last year at primary school documented for years to come.

The Doreen Clarke Nature Reserve is situated in the mistbelt area of Hilton/Winterskloof, just north of Pietermaritzburg. The reserve is small and consists mainly of mist belt forest, with some grassland on the edge of the forest. It is an easy area in which to walk and contains some of the best mistbelt forest birds. There are also picnic spots throughout so enjoy the day.

From the N3 take the Hilton turnoff go through the village to the Crossways Hotel intersection. Continue straight through the intersection, along Dennis Shepstone Rd, pass the Hilton Police Station, and take the first road left after the entrance to Cowan House School (Amy Wilson Drive). Come to T-junction, turn right and after about 1km see reserve on left.

Grace College pupils, Celani Mchunu (Grade 12) and Keziah Dewing (Gr 11), were awarded Honours at the school’s recent Prize Giving and received their white blazers in recognition of their exceptional sports achievements. Celani was awarded Tri-Colours Honours for having achieved full colours in Girls’ Soccer, Indoor and Field Hockey and Keziah received her honours for representing KZN U19 Girls’ Soccer at the Inter-Provincial Soccer Tournament in Gauteng recently. These young sportswomen have shown consistent dedication on the sports field and we are delighted that their hard work has paid off.

Harnessing a strong spirit of community consideration, Protea Hotel Hilton staff diligently saved as much as possible each month of 2016 to provide a group of 34 orphaned children from 7 years to 12 years with Christmas gifts and a Christmas party.

 

Last year each child was gifted a small package of 3 new pairs of undies and the party. This year because of a bigger effort and discounts from Makro's manager Randhir Hottie, these small packages were upsized and included a skateboard and soccer ball for every boy and a doll for every girl.

 

On Thursday, 8 December the group of orphans were ferried to the Protea Hotel by Cogda and child and family welfare where they enjoyed a party that will likely be the highlight of their year.

 

The staff of the Protea Hotel by Marriott Hilton personally contributed from their salaries each month to make this a success.

 

Attending the lunch were DEPT COGTA members; Ntombenhle Xaba, Siwakhile Ngcobo and, Denzyl Sathianathon also attending were Child Welfare PMB staff and social workers; Jothie Perumal, Varsha Haridass, Lungisani Myende, Thobeka Nala, Sindi Hlope and Samukele Nzama.

On the 4th of November 2016, the boys from Hilton 242 Round Table hosted their second charity poker evening of the year. The increased number of players at this event, showed the increasing support of this young, driven team of men who are doing their bit to help raise money for charities that are in need.

 

The set up was the same as the first event, where all the buy in monies went into the pot and was divided into a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place values. The top three players could then nominate there charity of choice to receive there portion as a donation. The top three all walked away with a delicious meat hamper as well as vouchers, shirts, a trophy and a few other prizes for all their hard work.

 

The event continued on for quite a few hours, which involved a lot of laughter, joking, card playing, banter, good food and one or two liquid refreshments. (Which were available on the night) as the night went on, there were lucky draw prizes, and all who took part in the event went home with something.
As the night went on and the three tables slowly turned into the final main table, the support shown by the players who had already played their final hand, was incredible! At the end of it all, first place went to Charles Kirton who donated his portion of the pot (R3600-00) to Freeme Animal Rehabilitation Center, second place went to Nicky Hockey who donated her portion (R2400-00) to the Howick SPCA, and third place went to Lyle Vorster who donated his portion (R1200-00) to PMB SPCA. A grand total of R7200-00 was for charity that evening!

 

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who supported the evening and made it such an enjoyable event. Of course a big thank you to all our sponsors, without them an event like this cannot take place.
