Undivided Roots ZA is a roots, rock, and reggae band for any occasion. Founded by the legendary Nstangu Cele, who is known as “Roots”, an independent street musician from Edendale, Pietermaritzburg. The band consists of 7 members: Black Wadada on guitar, Revival Cele on bass, Heaven Cele on drums, Spear Cele on keyboards, Kingdom Cele on second keyboards, Rainbow Cele on percussion, and Judgement Cele on lead guitar.

The members are all brothers and sisters who make a living from music, by busking locally and outside of Pietermaritzburg. Undivided Roots has shared the stage with many gifted musicians, including Johnny Clegg, Gangs of Ballet, Prime Circle, Queen Ifrica, Watershed, Zahara, and Tony Rebel. Their collective style could be described as eclectic, due to the varied genres they cover (hence the reference to 'Jukebox') and they'll be performing hits by, amongst others, Otis Redding, Sia, Billy Joel, and Pat Benator.

The Hilton Adult Tennis Tournament brought together players and fans alike for a weekend filled with delightful matches and camaraderie on September 28 and 29, 2024. Despite a gloomy weather forecast, spirits were high, and players completed all their matches comfortably, showcasing their tennis skills in a lively atmosphere.

This year, 53 enthusiastic competitors took to the courts, participating in men’s and ladies’ doubles on Saturday and mixed doubles on Sunday. Although entries were slightly lower than in previous years due to the change in the KZN trials dates and some extended school holidays, the energy of the event was excellent.

A special shoutout goes to Hilton Quarry Spar, whose generous sponsorship provided not only hampers for the winners but also delicious meals throughout the weekend. Additional support came from local businesses including Profile Properties, Mark de Voest, The Cure House, The Rotunda Farm Stall, Wedgewood Nougat, P.O Box Honey, DUT, and Richard Katandika Sports. Hilton Tennis Club members contributed generously to the prizes by donating bottles of wine and baking delicious cakes for morning and afternoon tea.

Swimmers from Olive Tree Swimming Club in Wentworth were invited to take part in an exclusive training clinic with four-time Olympic medallist Chad le Clos at the Kings Park Pool on Sunday.

Le Clos, currently in Durban for the SA Short Course Championships where he achieved qualifying times in four events for the World Championships in Budapest later this year, joined the young swimmers in the pool, teaming up with coach Wayne Riddin to inspire the next generation of aspiring Olympians.

“This is what I love to do, just being with them in the water and helping them a little bit really brings me joy,” said Le Clos afterwards.

The initiative was part of the launch of the Chad le Clos Foundation’s activities for the year ahead with plans to conduct clinics on a regular basis across South Africa.

“This is just the start of many great things to come,” explained the 32-year-old star. “We started small but we’re really going to scale this up big time next year. We just want to give back and make sure we’re doing the right things and making sure it’s enjoyable and encouraging for them.”

Taking part in the clinic on Sunday was 16-year-old Jesse Smith who said: “I found it very fun and very educational. It was very useful for going forward in swimming.

“I was very excited to meet Chad because I’ve never met anyone famous – he’s an Olympic swimmer and he’s very good and also from South Africa so that makes it very special.

“I learned that even the smallest changes in swimming make big differences in your time and how fast you are, so my technique definitely got sharpened today.”

Coach at Olive Tree Swimming Club Lucia Ruiters said the reason she founded the Olive Tree Swimming Club was to get kids into sport and keep them away from the drugs and violence which are a part of everyday life in Wentworth.

“We are so excited to meet Chad,” said Ruiters. “I’ve had restless nights for two days because this is like a dream. One of the girls was actually shaking, the other one said ‘pinch me’ so it’s really a big thing for us because we’ve watched Chad over the years and we admired him swimming so powerfully.

“We really feel blessed and honoured to be associated with him. I really feel it’s going to get us to the next level of swimming. I feel that we will get the next Chad [from our club] and we will have children coming out, swimming different levels, swimming very well and making a difference,” she added.

“Most of the time you have people doing well in sport concentrating on themselves, but to be able to come out of yourself and realise you need to give what you have to a community that won’t have that opportunity is very humbling. So we are very thankful to Chad. We are very excited.”

Chris Smith became the sixth South African swimmer to achieve a world championship qualifying time at the SA Short Course Championships in Durban on Saturday.

Despite tearing his swimsuit just before his 50m breaststroke final and having to make a speedy change, the 18-year-old stormed to victory in a time of 26.68 seconds to book his spot on the team to the World Short Course Championships taking place in Budapest, Hungary from 10-15 December.

“I think it warmed me up a little bit because I had to jog to the bathroom and come back,” joked the Centurion swimmer afterwards.

“I was quite confident coming in because this morning my stroke rate was slow so I just picked it up tonight,” he added of swimming under the mark.

Meanwhile, dipping under the qualifying time in his fourth event of the competition was US-based up-and-comer Ruard van Renen, who is coached by former SA swimmer Neil Versfeld at the University of Georgia.

While he had already achieved qualifying times in the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 50m backstroke, Van Renen’s main focus was the 100m backstroke. He made absolutely sure of swimming the required time in that event, first with a 50.64-second effort in the morning heat and then 50.97 for victory in the final.

“This morning I really pushed… doing it in the morning took the pressure off so I could come out here to just enjoy the race,” he said after the final.

“I feel like the past few days I’ve surprised myself and other people too. Having all those races back to back definitely put some lactic acid in my legs… now I’m going to relax and eat way too much pasta,” added the mechanical engineering student.

Also adding another qualifying time to her haul was Rebecca Meder. The 22-year-old cruised to victory in the 200m individual medley in a time of 2:08.78 but admitted afterwards, she was hoping to go faster.

“I think I was hoping for at least a 2:07 but I can either be hard on myself or I can be satisfied and happy that I made the time,” said the SA record holder afterwards.

“I always come out and critique everything, but it’s a solid time… and that’s all I really needed at this stage,” she added.

“Today was a tough day in the office for me mentally, I was quite tired today so I’m more proud of myself showing up to the battle every single time and being able to deliver.”

Earlier in the day, Chad le Clos swam a 200m butterfly time trial and recorded another world championship qualifying time, finishing in 1:53.58. That means it was mission accomplished for the veteran star who achieved qualifying times in the 50, 100 and 200m butterfly as well as in the 100m freestyle.

A celebratory concert of music students who have achieved high scoring distinction results for their Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams in 2023/24. The concert will be held at the Margot Chamberlain Recital Hall, Hilton College on Sunday 20 October at 15h00. The programme includes a variety of instruments from violin tocello, voice to piano and represents performers from grades 1 to grade 8 (music grades).

Formed in 1889, ABRSM have been proud to continue to be the global leader in setting the standard for learning music and have held exams in South Africa for 128 years. ABRSM’s mission is to inspire more people to participate in music and these concerts are a culmination of everyone’s committed hard work coming together in the musical performances. Performances will be heard from a number of highly talented musicians who epitomise the quality of musicianship associated with the achievement of the ABRSM assessments. However, these concerts are firstly a tribute to the hard work as performers and the support and guidance you receive from your teachers and parents.

Discover What Major Chemicals Customers are looking for in Future Suppliers DCC launches innovative programme to empower SMMEs in the chemicals sectorThe Durban Chemicals Cluster (DCC) recently launched its groundbreaking Origin8 programme, designed to drive localisation and enable transformation in the South African chemicals sector. This innovative initiative, funded by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA), aims to empower small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to integrate successfully into major supply chains.

Head of Accelerators for the Durban Chemicals Cluster, Kyle Ballard, says the Origin8 programme has been specifically designed to expose SMMEs in the local chemicals sector to leading industry customer standards and requirements."Origin8 is an exciting and important step towards empowering emerging and established small businesses in the sector by providing them with the insights and practical tools they need to integrate into larger supply chains and sustainably grow their businesses," Ballard states. “Through the programme’s highly interactive sessions, we are supporting SMMEs in developing customer-centric business offerings that are aligned with the voice of the customer.”

According to Ballard, the programme offers support in six major areas:
• Direct customer engagement: SMMEs will participate in an interactive Q&A panel discussion with major national chemical sector customers. This enables them to hear firsthand about customer requirements, standards, and expectations for future suppliers.
• Business alignment and growth: The programme helps SMMEs identify potential gaps and growth opportunities within their businesses. This will assist them in aligning their value propositions with customer needs and better integrate into chemical value chains.
• Business growth tools: Access to practical tools and resources designed to support business growth and development.
• Networking opportunities: Direct engagement with new and potential customers, as well as other industry stakeholders, including a network of fellow SMMEs.
• Accredited training: Participation in the "Mastering the Art of Client Presentations" course, an NQF level 2 unit standard.
• Pitch development: Assistance in crafting a concise and compelling business pitch to effectively communicate value to potential clients and partners.

“By focusing on the customer standards and providing SMMEs with the skills to align their offerings directly with these requirements, Origin8 is all about bridging the gap from high potential to purchase order," Ballard adds and encourages qualifying companies to apply.

Yershen Pillay, CEO of the Chemical Industries Education & Training Authority (CHIETA), funder of the DCC Origin8 programme, is delighted with its potential for transformation and believes Origin8 is a milestone in the growth of the chemicals sector. “The programme embodies our commitment to enabling small businesses and driving economic growth in the sector,” he explains. “Through accredited training and a range of highly valuable practical resources, SMMEs can become key players in enterprise and supplier development (ESD) and ultimately, take their place in major supply chains."

Ideal participants of the programme are established Black South African-owned companies that have been operating for at least two years and that qualify as Small Enterprises (QSEs) with an annual turnover of between R10 and R50 million and Exempt Micro Enterprises (EMEs) with a turnover of up to R10 million.

Companies must be based in KwaZulu-Natal with a preference for the greater Durban area.

Rebecca Meder wrapped up the SA Short Course Championships in Durban with another world championships qualifying time on Sunday.

The 22-year-old claimed an emphatic victory in the 200m breaststroke, dipping under the 2 minute 20 mark for the first time and finishing in a time of 2:19.77 to add to her list of events for the World Short Course Championships in Budapest from 10-15 December.

“Today I just wanted to see what I could do and try not to force the speed but just to let the speed carry through, and to finish on a 2:19 is incredible,” said a thrilled Meder afterwards.

“The fact that the breaststroke is so strong, shows that I still need to work on my other three as the medley is my main event. But I’m really happy with the breaststroke and we’ll see where it takes me.”

Earlier in the day, Emma Chelius (Emma Chelius with teammates L-R Kaylene Corbett  and Erin Gallagher) swam the final event of her career, winning the 4x50m medley relay with TUKS teammates Kerryn Herbst, Georgia Els and Caitlin de Lange in a new South African record time of 1:50.95.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a successful international career, competing at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and African Championships.

The highlight, however, came in 2021 when she represented South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics and reached the semifinals of the 50m freestyle, breaking the national record twice, both in the heats and semifinal in the Japanese capital.

Speaking after her final race, Chelius explained: “I’ve gone through the whole spectrum of emotions in the last few days leading up to this so I think I’ve processed all the bittersweet heartache of leaving the sport so today I just felt excited

“The race went by in a blur and having my family here to support me was just the cherry on top.

“It made me feel excited for the next chapter knowing it will still involve swimming,” she added, pointing to a possible foray into broadcast media.

“My goal was always to be a good teammate and I think I can still do that even if I’m not swimming. It just feels like the perfect time to end… my husband [Troyden Prinsloo] is coaching so I’ll still be involved in swimming and I know that the teammates and friends that I’ve made will be lifelong friends so overall I’m very happy.”

While one swimmer was coming to the end of her career, another is just about to kick his off at international level. 16-year-old Kris Mihaylov (Image below) picked up his third national title of the week on Sunday, winning the 1500m freestyle in 14:57.56.

Mihaylov’s other titles came in the 200m freestyle and in the 800m freestyle, dipping under the world championship qualifying time in the longer event as well as breaking the long-standing national record that was set by Ryk Neethling 24 years ago.

Neethling, who went on to win Olympic gold in Athens in 2004, hailed the rising star for his record-breaking swim.

“I am delighted for Kris that he broke my last senior SA record from 2000,” said Neethling.

“I’ve been a bit concerned at the lack of young talent coming through in the middle to longer distances but at 16, Kris is showing that he’s got a bright future ahead of him and for SA swimming.

“He’s being coached by the legendary Peter Williams and he can’t get better technical coaching and mentorship. I will be keeping a keen eye on him.

“My advice to him: dream big, work harder and stay humble.”

16-year-old Kris Mihaylov and 17-year-old Jessica Thompson (Top image) both added their names to the list of swimmers headed for the World Short Course Championships in Budapest later this year after swimming the required qualifying times in Durban on Friday.

Mihaylov claimed victory in the 800m freestyle at the SA Short Course Championships at Kings Park pool in a time of 7 minutes 43.56 seconds, well under the qualifying time and four seconds clear of his nearest rival, while it was a slightly more roundabout route for Thompson.

The 17-year-old just missed out on the qualifying time in both the heats and final of the 50m butterfly on Thursday but returned on Friday to achieve it in a time trial in 25.76 seconds.

“I think I was really nervous – a lot of people were watching so I think it was just a big deal proving to myself that all the hard work and training that has gone into it has all paid off… I just had to trust myself and give it a shot,” said the Johannesburg swimmer.

Explaining what she had changed from her previous swims, Thompson added: “I just tried to take away a breath because I realised it was slowing me down a bit and my underwaters I’ve been training a lot, so I took an extra kick off the turn and I’m just so happy I executed that time, it’s been a great day.”

Later in the evening, Thompson added the 50m backstroke to her list of victories in Durban, winning in a time of 26.97 seconds, not far off the 26.54 needed for another qualifying time.

Mihaylov also claimed another title in the evening session, this time winning the 200m freestyle in 1:44.77.

Meanwhile, both Chad le Clos and Ruard van Renen continued to show their fine form at the championships. 21-year-old Van Renen added two more world championship qualifying times to his haul – in the 50m backstroke and the 100m butterfly.

He admitted the backstroke, which he won in 23.31 seconds, had taken him by surprise.

“Usually the 50 I just swim for fun, I wasn’t expecting any times,” he said afterwards. “It’s just kind of a primer race for tomorrow’s 100 backstroke so swimming that time was ridiculous.

“The 100 back is the main focus, that’s what I flew in for,” added the US-based rising star. “Anything that I picked up before that is a bonus.”

Van Renen’s second qualifier of the night was in the 100m butterfly, where he was once again up against veteran Le Clos, who pipped him to the 100m freestyle title on Thursday night.

Le Clos took the win in 49.50 seconds, his third qualifying time of the championships, with his young challenger second in 50.24.

“After this morning I would have been happy with a 50-low or 49-high so I was delighted with the time,” said Le Clos after the race. “It’s about a second off what I won it in two years ago so I’m very, very excited. But Ruard again, swimming 50.2... it’s great for the future of our sport.”

Van Renen was full of praise for Le Clos, saying: “I was just sticking next to Chad, sticking on his hip and he dragged me towards the end… Fly is Chad’s baby so you can’t really compare him to anything else… I know he wasn’t expecting me so I hope I pushed him a little bit too.”
