Debbie Coombes and Angie Muggleton are two dedicated mums and enthusiastic teachers, putting all their years of experience into opening a Pre-School in Hilton.  Hilltops Pre-School will be operating from behind the Rotunda and will be open for registration by the end of October 2011.  The school motto 'Freshly Grown Kids.

Laddsworth Primary School is very proud of their Grade 3 teacher Jenny Ireland who inspires young and old to follow their passion. At the age of 5 Jenny fell into an empty swimming pool and her mom promptly decided to take her daughter for swimming coaching. The coach recognised Jenny's natural swimming ability as she took to the water enthusiastically.

Jenny soon joined her school swim team at St Mary's DSG in Pretoria, and in her high school years swam for Northern Transvaal, during this time Jenny was named team captain, an unexpected honour as the only English speaking girl in the team. At Teachers Training College Jenny spent two years swimming for the Witwatersrand University team.

After starting her family Jenny took a break from swimming until her youngest son was eight and she took him for coaching with Dean Price. The lure of the water was huge and Jenny was quickly back in the water, loving it! Mrs Price suggested Jenny join the Gauteng Masters and train for the Midmar Mile which she has swum annually since 1995.

During the last 16 years Jenny has swum provincially to achieve her National grades, in 2000 she entered the World Championships in Munich and in the same year Jenny earned her SA Colours, which she has managed to achieve each year since then. This is a mighty feat as the FINA time is taken from the top ten percent of the best times achieved per age group per annum, as set by the world swimming body. This annual challenge keeps Jenny, who confesses to be horribly competitive, in the water.
The annual highlight of Jenny's swimming career is participating in the Nationals where her best event is the 400m medley swim.

Jenny says, 'Swimming is such a great sport as people aged 100 plus are swimming competitively. The focus of Masters is on Fun and Friendship, so all shapes, sizes, abilities and ages are welcomed.

Five Hilton College boys have been selected for the various KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Water Polo Teams.  They will compete at the various interprovincial tournaments in the December holidays.

Daniel Meyer who matriculated in 2010 from Hilton College has been awarded a prestigious scholarship to CALTECH (California Institute of Technology).  CALTECH was recently rated the number one university in the world (this was published recently in the Sunday Times and Harvard has been knocked from the no 1 spot for the first time in many years). 

Of the 36 000 worldwide applicants for first year, Daniel is one of the 220 first years who have been accepted.  Daniel has enrolled with double majors in Applied and Computational Mathematics and Economics.  According the International department of CALTECH Daniel will also be the first undergraduate student to enrol from South Africa. 

This is a wonderful achievement and we congratulate Daniel and wish him well for the future.

Congratulations to the following Hilton College pupils who have excelled in the National Science and Life Sciences Olympiad.  Sam Bookbinder in Grade 12 achieved tie 5th in the Olympiad which is outstanding.  All the other boys were placed in the top 100.

On Thursday 15th September 2011 Laddsworth Primary School showed their support of the DUCT river clean-up. The school was divided into three groups, provided with gloves and rubbish bags and they headed our into the areas surrounding the school to tidy up. This is part of Laddsworth's commitment to the broader Hilton Community.

Parents were invited to join the class groups and it was great to see them all out working together, thank you Laddsworth!

Winstead Road was recently changed to a one way from the Brindy Road side on Mondays through to Fridays, from 7.00am until 5.00pm, we encourage you to spread the word, this may encourage drivers to plan a new route ahead of time. Any minor inconvenience the change may cause diminishes when you remember that this has been done to keep our children safe.

So no more entering Winstead road from Groenekloof road is permitted, to everyone who has adjusted their habits and found a new route, thank you.

Tess Le Roux, a grade 11 pupil from Grace College, participated in a horse riding competition in Johannesburg recently.  She came third overall in the Welcome Stakes and fourth overall in the Speed and Precision competition.  Each event comprised of 97 competitors, made up of Juniors and Adults, and Tess was the top Junior competitor for both events.  Grace College is extremely proud of Tess' achievements and wishes her many more years of happy riding.

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI), completed the judging of the 2011 International World Dressage Challenge and notified our South African Equestrian Federation of the final results, last Friday.

Kirsten and Highlander finished 3rd overall in our World Grouping, in the Medium Section!  

The FEI have placed South Africa in a group of countries which include Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.  Instead of bringing horses to one country and one venue for the competition, international judges travel to each country and judge competitors competing the same dressage tests.  The alleviates the logistical challenges of the movement of horses around the world, as well as the cost, organisation, etc.  This year the judges were Peter Holler from Germany (President of the Ground Jury)  and Jacques van Daele from Belguim.  There are 5 different levels of dressage competed in the FEI World Dressage Challenge, namely (in order of difficulty) - Prix St George, Advanced, Medium, Elementary and Preliminary.

This is a fantastic result, as Kirsten being only 15, could have competed with the juniors on ponies in the lower Elementary or Preliminary Sections, or elect to ride alongside the adults, on horses in the Medium Sections and above.  She elected to compete with the adults, which the FEI allow so long as your 16th birthday falls within that year.  Kirsten is 16 in December, making her the youngest competitor amongst the Seniors in SA and possibly even in our group of countries.  This is no 'top' age limit to the Seniors and women compete alongside the men.

Baobab Antiquity Trading, a vintage and antique furniture and d??cor shop, opened in August at the Hilton Quarry Centre. The store is owned by sisters Michelle Haldane and Brigette Johnson. Michelle is responsible for the sourcing of the stock, and lives in England with her husband Bryan, who has been in the antique restoration trade for the last 15 years. Brigette is an artist and exhibition designer at a local museum, and is responsible for the running of the shop.

'For many years we have talked about opening a shop, but it wasn't until our last visit to South Africa that we saw that there was a growing demand for French and antique furniture. So, we took the leap and our dream has now become a reality.  Our shop is in the most beautiful location, filled with the most beautiful things and the response has been more than we could have hoped for. says Michelle.

Apart from being eco-friendly, furniture made in the past was made to last lifetimes, and with craftsmanship and timber that is hard to find today. We focus very heavily on up-cycling, ensuring that items are restored to their natural beauty or given a new lease on life.  All homes could do with a little vintage!  Something that was once loved and treasured with a story to tell, that can now become part of your story.

Today a kilometre of the indigenous Celtis Africana trees were planted alongside Cedara road, from the Rotunda in towards Hilton. This Tree Planting Initiative was suggested to HiltonVillage.co.za by Andrew Morphew of Avidity Real Estate, the exciting idea of making Hilton more beautiful was shared amongst clients of HiltonVillage.co.za and pledges quickly came in to buy and plant 100 white stinkwoods. These trees will present an increasingly beautiful welcome to all Hilton visitors and residents entering from the Cedara on-ramp.

We are grateful to Avidity Real Estate, Pam Golding Properties especially Gwyneth, Maureen and Rogan, Harcourts Hilton, Green Door Environmental, Tasha's Fantastic Fudge, Carey at RE/MAX, Hilton Clothing, Lindsay's, Ronnoco Nursery and Nicolson's Country Cafe for buying trees as well as to Mondi Group who will be ensuring water is trucked in weekly for the trees.

Alex March from Nkosi Indigenous Nursery did a marvellous job in completing the planting, his prices are unbeatable and he follows through with service as promised.

Going forward our plan is to repeat this type of project each September in honour of Spring and Arbor week, it is a way to give back to Hilton, the community and an investment in the future.

Grace College pupil, Siphiwumusa Radebe, has made it through to the KZN Provincial Kickboxing Team.  Siphiwumusa will be competing in a few tournaments leading up to the National Championships on 5 November 2011.  Grace College wishes Siphiwumusa all the best for the upcoming events.

Local author, amateur historian, bowler, chorister, geographer and tour guide Chris Lake has published his second historical novel, Baiwa. This is a tale of an orphan who rises above adversity, it takes the reader across the globe from South Africa to Scotland and will be of interest to everybody who enjoys an uplifting read with a historical character.

The story is similar to Chris Lakes first Novel, Across the Barrier in that it too is woven around a true-life story. It tells how the son of a famous whisky making family befriends a young Zulu 'By the Way' who is freshly orphaned, his home and parents destroyed by cannon fire. 'By the Way' is brought back to camp and a strong bond grows. The two share adventures and life skill experiences, there is a romance for Fergus and a trip to Scotland. 

Proceeds of Baiwa will be donated to the iZulu Orphans Society in Empangeni. Chris and Margaret aim to ease somewhat the plight of hungry, lonely children who face the gigantic challenge of being orphaned.
