It’s all happening at ART in the Country 2025, just six weeks away!
With little more than 6 weeks until Art in the Country 2025 Harrington House hosted a gathering of much appreciated sponsors, artists, and media representatives. Event founder Kathy Jacobs shared an update on what would be forthcoming for this edition of Hilton’s wonderful annual art exhibition.
Artist Highlights
Amongst the artists present at the pre-event launch were Thandi Ntuli and Sir Lincoln. Thandi works in clay, making fascinating figurines and gorgeous pots. Sir Lincoln is a multi-disciplinary artist who incorporates all mediums, including recycled material in his work and makes lovely pots.
Lara Mellon, now resident in Howick for around 3 years, looks forward to exhibiting her mixed media creations largely inspired by nature. She works in collages which may include resins, oils and found objects.
First time exhibitor Claudia Ahrens, the youngest artist this year, began her art journey under Kathy’s tutelage just 3 years ago. It will be intriguing to see how her memorable style, currently focused on female portraiture, develops. Claudia’s creative pursuit is inspired by her grandmother, an artist who enjoyed painting trains.
Another newcomer is Olga Nikitina whose uniqueness is her skill for underwater painting. Olga is also a trained interior designer and dive instructor. Her passion is to paint the ocean. Not all her paintings are done underwater, but she perfected a technique using paint that does not dissolve in water, Olga paints in a swimming pool studio and regularly returns to the Red Sea, to her studio to work there.
Ever popular Siyabonga Ngubane joined the fun at Harrington House with some of his sketches on show. Siyabonga made the Top Ten List last year and was joyfully challenged by Kathy to aim for Top 5 this time around.
Joining this marvelous multi-day exhibition for the very first time is Mandy Johnston. Her live art, being wire wool structures which are set alight, are brought to ART in the Country by Brokoop Insurance Brokers. Sessions will happen in the evening with times still to be advised. These animated art shows are sure to be mesmerizing. Welcome musical entertainment in the evenings is booked again with multilinguist singer and song-writer René Tshiakanyi and Des will perform during the day.
Neighbourhood Gems
Besides well-loved local artists like Marion Lowe, Simon Addy and Sarah Pryke, many home-grown regulars will be back at the event; iThemba Projects will once again manage and benefit from gate entrance sales, food and refreshments available will include a street menu from Jackie Cameron's School of Food and Wine as well as your favourite pancakes from Hilton Scouts.
Be sure to block out chunks of time to attend this fabulous Hilton art event with friends. You have six weeks to plan your visits, and your planning time is going to pass quickly because with all the upcoming public holidays only 30 of those countdown days are official working days!

Ari Sitas is Poetry Africa’s Featured Poet
The Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal has announced internationally celebrated poet, dramatist, writer and sociologist Ari Sitas as the Featured Poet for the 29th edition of the Poetry Africa festival that will take place in Durban from 2 – 11 October 2025.
As we reflect and engage with this year’s Poetry Africa’s festival theme, “Poetry: An Architecture for Social Justice” we believe that Ari Sitas’s contributions as a dynamic cultural worker to the struggles against apartheid remains as resonantly loud and relevant in our continued quest to build an anti-apartheid society modelled on the values of social justice”, said Siphindile Hlongwa, the curator of the Poetry Africa festival.
Ari Sitas spent 27 years in Durban, where he played a leading role in anti-apartheid and transformation processes in the cultural, community and workspaces sectors. He relocated to Cape Town as a professor at the University of Cape Town.
Sitas grew up in colonial Cyprus during the island's independence struggles and bi-communal strife and matured in Johannesburg, where he received his undergraduate and post-graduate education at the University of the Witwatersrand. He received his PhD in 1984 under the supervision of Eddie and David Webster. Academics Eddie Webster and David Webster inspired generations of students with their vision and practice of critically engaged scholarship, not only in South Africa but across the world.
“One of the key roles of the Featured Poet programme at the Poetry Africa festival is to honour legendary South African poets and to create platforms for inter-generational dialogue. Presenting Ari Sitas as the 2025 Featured Poet, we have the opportunity not only to engage with him but also to be reminded about the incredible legacies of David Webster and Eddie Webster too”, said Siphindile Hlongwa.

Ari Sitas’s was one of the founders of the award-winning Insurrections Ensemble, which combined the compositional and poetic crafts of AfroAsia. He directed the musical oratorio Must Gandhi Fall? at Cape Town’s Homecoming Centre of District Six. His work has been translated into several languages, including isiZulu, French, German, Greek, Turkish, Urdu and Hindi. Several of his poems have also been set to music.
His latest books are Maps of Sorrow(2023, with Sumangala Damodaran) on the movement of precolonial music in AfroAsia, Music Notebook (2023) published by Chimurenga and a new poetry collection, Surplus Values (his tenth poetry collection). His other works are Tropical Scars (1989), Songs, Shoeshine and Piano (1991) Slave Trades (2000) RDP Poems (2004) Around the World in 80 Days (2013) Rough Music (2014) Vespa Diaries (2018) Oratorio for Small Things that Fall (2020) and Mapping Gondwana (2022).
ABOUT THE POETRY AFRICA FESTIVAL:
The Poetry Africa festival is South Africa’s largest and longest-running annual gathering of poets. Presented as both an online and live festival, the festival features an array of South African poets alongside poets from the African continent and other parts of the globe in poetry readings, book launches, performances, critical engagements and workshops. In 2026, the Centre for Creative at the University of KwaZulu-Natal will present the 5th World Slam Poetry Competition, bringing to Durban poets from across 40 different nations from across the globe.
No Smith or Le Clos as rising stars take centre stage at SA Swimming Championships
A changing of the guard will be keenly felt at this week's SA Senior National Swimming Championships in Gqeberha, as the start sheets reveal the notable absence of icons Tatjana Smith and Chad le Clos.
Smith retired from the sport after claiming gold and silver at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris while 2012 Olympic champion Chad le Clos is taking an extended break to recover from injury. This will be the first time in 20 years he won’t be competing, although he will be on the pool deck offering encouragement to those who are.
There will still be plenty of great swimming on the cards, though, as the current crop of athletes target qualification for the World Championships taking place in Singapore from 27 July to 3 August.
Among them is Olympic finalist Pieter Coetzé who has had to adapt to balancing swimming with his first-year psychology studies at the University of Pretoria.
“This year has been very interesting. I started studying so it’s pretty new to me, having to manage my time a bit more outside of the pool,” explained the 20-year-old. “But I’ve kept up my training and the standard’s quite high, so I’m in good shape and I’m excited to qualify for a few events for the World Championships,” added Coetzé who is looking to qualify for the global event in the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke and the 50 and 100m freestyle.
Coetzé is likely to face stiff competition from US-based backstroker Ruard van Renen, who reached the final of the 100m backstroke at last year’s World Short Course Championships – his first major international meet.
“Training has been better than ever, I’ve just finished with a great collegiate year going a bunch of PBs and All-American titles, so confidence heading into nationals is at an all-time high,” said Van Renen, who is coached by former SA swimmer Neil Versfeld at the University of Georgia. “Even though it’s a different pool, I know the work that me and Neil have put in will show.”
Also one to keep an eye on this week is Rebecca Meder. A year ago, the New Zealand-based star suffered a ruptured appendix just a few weeks before the national championships, so things are likely to look very different this time around.
“I have been doing lots of racing in New Zealand in preparation for Nationals and my times have been looking really strong and pretty solid in training, which has been quite positive,” said Meder who will be competing in the 100 and 200m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle in Gqeberha.
“Compared to last year, there’s not really much comparison… This year is a very different set-up. I’m looking forward to actually racing at Nationals… The world is swimming fast at the moment, so I think us South Africans are having to hop on that fast train and see how fast we can go too.”
Meder won’t have things all her own way in the 200m breaststroke with two-time Olympic finalist Kaylene Corbett still in the mix and hunting for a national title. Double Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lara van Niekerk has chosen to forgo the championships, however, to focus on training after a long injury layoff.
The men’s breaststroke events are likely to provide a fascinating match-up between fellow World Short Course Championships finalists Michael Houlie and Chris Smith.
Houlie is feeling confident heading into the championships.
“I’m really happy with the work that’s been put in. I know that when I’m at my best I am having fun, staying loose and playful and that really enables me to just be present and trust the process… I’m very motivated and focused for this year,” said Houlie, who is targeting a final World University Games appearance this year as well as the World Championships.
Matt Sates (top image) will also be out to impress after a training stint in Switzerland with Olympic bronze medallist Noè Ponti. It will be a busy week for the Pietermaritzburg swimmer who is entered into 10 events. His fellow Olympian Erin Gallagher is entered into five and is sure to dominate the butterfly sprints while Aimee Canny will look to defend her 100 and 200m freestyle titles.
The SA Senior National Swimming Championships take place at Newton Park Swimming Pool in Gqeberha from 9-13 April.

Denis Hurley Street Lit Project Donates Books to iSithumba Adventures to Inspire Young Minds
Isithumba Travels Adventure Park, the busy rural tourism and community empowerment initiative in the Valley of 1000 Hills, near Durban, which works in partnership with Green Corridors, has received a generous donation of books from the Denis Hurley Street Lit Project.
This collection of conservation, environment, wildlife, tourism and field guide books will be available to the 60 children who visit iSithumba Adventures after school each day, offering them an opportunity to explore the wonders of nature, sustainability, and the world beyond their village.
Street Lit is a successful initiative of Durban NGO Denis Hurley Centre which cares for the city’s homeless, vulnerable and refugee communities and helps homeless people to work towards becoming financially sustainable. The programme comprises 20 men and women, all of whom are avid readers and have experienced homelessness. They have been trained to run their own micro second-hand book businesses. Public donations of books enable them to sell these and earn a modest living.
Manager of the StreetLit project, Illa Thompson explains the motivation for the donation of books: “We are really fortunate that the public provides us with ongoing donations of books for our project. It has always been our philosophy that any books which are surplus to our requirements or are better suited to be appreciated in a specialist library context, are gifted onto places where they can be enjoyed. We are especially mindful of the limited access many people have to books outside of the city hub and major malls. Knowing about this project, we have been setting aside books which we thought would benefit the children that are being mentored at the centre around tourism, conservation and environmental sustainability, and together with the Street Lit booksellers, we felt it would be hugely beneficial to these youngsters in this community.”
Isithumba Travels Adventure Park falls under the umbrella of the Isithumba Community Development Movement (ICDM) a community-based youth-driven initiative that aims to uplift and empower the youth of this community.
The Park is not only an adventure tourism destination, it is a space where the local community benefits from sustainable initiatives that improve education, environmental awareness, and economic opportunities.
“By integrating nature-based tourism with community upliftment, we aim to create meaningful experiences for visitors while making sure that local youth are exposed to knowledge that empowers them to shape their futures,” says Amimi Mlaba, owner and manager of iSithumba Travels.
“We are so excited to start our library and to give children a chance to read books that stimulate curiosity and a love for the natural world,” says Mlaba. “By giving them access to these books that teach them about wildlife and the environment, we are nurturing a new generation that will care for and protect our natural heritage. This works towards our aim to use tourism as a force for positive change.”
With limited access to libraries in rural areas, many children in iSithumba lack the resources to develop strong reading habits. This donation changes that by providing an informal learning space where they can immerse themselves in books that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the environment.
Isithumba is looking for donations of bookshelves – and anyone interested can contact Amimi on 065 936 4418
Donations of quality, current, good condition books for the Denis Hurley Centre St Lit project are always welcome. Contact the Centre on 031 301 2240. In order for donated books to be distributed fairly, please donate books to the project bookshop, and not to the individual vendors.

Living with the highs and lows: World Bipolar Day 30 March 2025
The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) proudly joins the global community in observing World Bipolar Awareness Day, on Sunday, 30 March 2025, a day dedicated to outraising awareness about Bipolar Disorder, reducing stigma, and supporting those living with the condition.
Bipolar Disorder is a complex Mental Health condition, which affects about 1% of the population, characterised by extreme mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and very deep lows (Depression). These fluctuations can impact energy levels, cognitive function, relationships, and daily life. Despite its challenges and stigma, with proper treatment, support, and understanding, people with Bipolar Disorder can lead fulfilling and functional lives.
Bipolar Strong: Resilience and Strength
"For years, I hid my diagnosis, terrified of how society would judge me. The fear of being labelled ‘unstable’ or ‘broken’ kept me silent, struggling alone in the dark. But the moment I met others who shared their stories, I realised I wasn’t alone—I was part of a community that understood. Through their courage, I found my own. I learned to embrace my diagnosis, educate myself, and take control of my Mental Health. Starting a Support Group wasn’t just about helping others—it was about reclaiming my own power. Now, I advocate not just for myself, but for everyone who has ever felt unseen. And that has been the most fulfilling part of my journey." Mogamad Nackerdien, Support Group Leader and Lived Experience Advocate, shares his personal journey.
“World Bipolar Day is an opportunity to educate the public, challenge wrong ideas, and encourage open conversations about Mental Health. Many people with Bipolar Disorder face stigma and discrimination, which can prevent them from seeking help. We want to remind everyone – people living with Bipolar Disorder and their family members – there is support, they are not alone,” says SADAG Founder and Director, Zane Wilson.
“Stigma remains one of the biggest barriers for people living with Bipolar Disorder, especially in South Africa, where misconceptions, fear, and silence often prevent people from seeking the help they need. Many suffer in isolation, afraid of being judged or misunderstood, which can delay diagnosis and treatment,” says SADAG Board Member and Psychiatrist, Dr Mashadi Motlana.
Breaking the stigma starts with awareness - by sharing real stories, trusted resources, and open conversations, we can educate communities, challenge stereotypes, and create a society that supports rather than shames. This World Bipolar Day, SADAG is committed to shining a light on Mental Health, encouraging understanding, acceptance, and access to care. When we talk about Mental Health, we give more people the courage to seek help, find hope, and build resilience. No one should face Bipolar Disorder alone—help is available, and recovery is possible.
To mark World Bipolar Day, SADAG will host a free LIVE online "Ask the Expert" session offering valuable guidance, practical tips, and a platform for open discussion. Join Psychiatrist Alicia Porter, on Friday 4 April at 1pm to unpack more about navigating Bipolar Disorder in the Workplace. Join the LIVE online Q&A on our Facebook, Instagram and TikTok pages.

▪ Free Online Support Services - a dedicated online webpage provides easy access to trusted resources, including downloadable brochures, expert videos, local and international articles, and self-help tools to better understand and manage Bipolar Disorder. Every week, SADAG hosts live online Q&A sessions with Mental Health experts, offering a safe space to ask questions and receive professional guidance. Visit www.sadag.org to explore our online resources.
How You Can Help People Living With Bipolar
1. Educate Yourself and Others – Learn about Bipolar Disorder and share accurate information to clarify myths and misinformation.
2. Show Compassion – Offer understanding and support to those living with Bipolar Disorder and their loved ones. Be mindful of the language we use when talking about Bipolar Disorder – instead of saying “She’s Bipolar”, rather say “She has Bipolar Disorder”
3. Share Stories – Use social media to share messages of hope and recovery, using the hashtags #WorldBipolarDay and #BipolarStrong. Follow SADAG on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and LinkedIn as we share helpful info every day.
4. Seek Help – If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out to SADAG’s Helplines above for free telephonic counselling, resources, and referrals.
"Sharing our stories has the power to turn silence into strength and stigma into support. No one should have to face Bipolar Disorder alone—help is available, hope is real, and recovery is possible. If just one person feels seen, heard, and supported today, then we have already made a difference,” says Mo Nackerdien, SADAG Support Group Leader.

2025 is a milestone year for SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge
Durban SPAR Women’s 10 / 5km Challenge – Celebrating 35 years in 2025Durban: Sunday 22 June
2025 is a milestone year for the iconic SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge, which celebrates its 35th running in Durban on Sunday 22 June.
Over the 34 years, the women’s race has enjoyed encouraging 369,406 participants to share a morning running around Durban’s scenic spots. In 1990, the year the race was started, 2,200 participants took part, with the biggest field of 17,607 competing in 2015. In 1990 South Africa's Colleen de Reuck took the top podium in a time of 34:16, and last year Tadu Nare from Ethiopia took the honours with an impressive record time of 31:14.
This year the field is capped at 12,000 with the 10km getting underway at 8am and the 5km starting at 8.45am.
“For 35 years, we have proudly sponsored women’s running races, championing health, empowerment, and community spirit, and it all began here in KZN,” says Menelisi Luthuli, SPAR KZN Marketing Director. ”This long-standing commitment has provided women with a space to set achievable goals, celebrate their fitness, and personal achievements, and do so with camaraderie. Beyond the race, SPAR’s support has inspired generations of women to lead active, confident lives – many reasons for our theme of #Twenty20Thrive this year.”
The #Twenty20Thrive builds on the idea of self-prioritization, growth, and investing in personal well-being with a commitment to thrive in all areas of life.
The 2025 race follows the unchanged fast and flat route with an out-and-back course starting along Masabala Yengwa Avenue, near the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium, with the race concluding on the outer fields of the rugby grounds. Special entertainment will be laid on at the finish, with many lucky draw prizes to be won including a Hyundai Exter 1.2 Premium MT to the value of R269,900.
For competitive runners, the Durban race forms part of the SPAR Grand Prix series which offers R185,000 in race category prizes. The top three athletes will net a total of R78,000, with the first across the line earning R33,000, the second placed lady R25,000 and the third R20,000.
Online entries are open until midnight on Youth Day, 16 June, or until the limit of 12,000 is reached. Online entry fees are R180 for both the 5km and 10km events. Social runners entering the 10km event and not in possession of a 2025 ASA licence number will be required to purchase a temp licence for R55. Bulk entries of 10 or more participants are available for corporate teams, social teams, and schools via the online entry link and close on Friday 6 June. Late entry at the Race Pack collection will cost R200 for both 10km and 5km events.
With the Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge series sold out 5 weeks before the event, KwaZulu-Natal entrants are encouraged to enter early to avoid disappointment.
Race pack collections will be at the Kings Park Stadium Outer Fields on Friday 20 June from 10am to 6pm and on Saturday 21 June from 10am to 4pm.
R5 from each entry will be donated to the Sinethemba Women’s Foundation based in Matabetule near Inanda Dam. The official race charity advocates for an end to gender-based violence. The organisation strives to create sustainable programmes that improves the lives of women, girls and youth from indigent communities.
For more info, visit www.spar.run or like the race’s social media.
Pacing each other ahead of the 35th running of the Durban SPAR Women’s 10 / 5km Challenge on Sunday 22 June are Cindy Watridge (SPAR KZN Omni Channel Retail Operations Manager); Natasha Jeebodh (SPAR KZN Development Design Manager); race day entertainer, Jane Magner from Veranda Panda; Nozipho Mkhize (SPAR KZN Advertising & Sponsorship Manager) and Precious Mthembu (SPAR KZN Race Ambassador and Former SPAR Protea’s Netball star, SPAR Baby Proteas Head Coach and teacher).
Knight Security Solutions Urges Clients and Community to Oppose Proposed Private Security Amendments
At Knight Security Solutions (KSS), the safety of our clients and the broader community remains our top priority. We are deeply concerned about the proposed amendments to the Private Security Industry Regulations, published on 28 March 2025 by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA). If enacted, these amendments will significantly impact the private security industry’s ability to provide effective protection in South Africa to citizens like you and me.
We urge all KSS clients and members of the public to voice their concerns by submitting objections to:
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before the deadline on 25 April 2025.
The Main Concerns Regarding the Proposed Amendments
1. Severe Restrictions on Armed Security Officers
The proposed amendments limit the ability of armed security officers to operate in public spaces such as malls, schools, churches, and hospitals. This would leave many critical locations vulnerable and increase the risk of crime in high-risk areas.
2. Unclear Limits on Ammunition
The regulations propose a vague limit on the quantity of ammunition security officers can carry, without defining what is considered "reasonable." This uncertainty could create inconsistencies in enforcement and weaken security organisations ability to respond to threats effectively.
3. Restrictions on Tactical Response Teams
The use of semi-automatic rifles will be limited to cash-in-transit operations, critical infrastructure protection (National Key Points), and anti-poaching services. This effectively disarms security personnel who protect businesses, residential estates, business parks, hospitals, malls, educational institutions and high-risk individuals facing violent threats daily.
4. Mandated Tracking Devices on Firearms
The amendments propose requiring all security firearms to be fitted with tracking devices. This requirement introduces excessive costs and logistical challenges, with no clear guidelines on implementation or how it will improve security effectiveness.
5. Banning of Essential Non-Lethal Weapons
The draft regulations prohibit the use of rubber bullets, water cannons, and Tasers unless approved by the Authority. These non-lethal tools play a crucial role in managing violent situations without resorting to lethal force. Removing them increases risks for security officers and the public. Pepper spray and handcuffs are also proposed as non-lethal weapons.
Why This Matters to You
The private security sector plays an essential role in South Africa, supplementing already stretched law enforcement (SAPS) efforts in protecting businesses, homes, and public spaces. Weakening private security regulations does not enhance public safety; instead, it increases our vulnerability to crime and the ability to protect ourselves.
At KSS, we are committed to protecting our clients and the community. However, these amendments threaten our ability to do so effectively. We need your voice to help us ensure that regulations reflect real-world security needs and do not undermine public safety.
How You Can Help
We encourage all concerned KSS clients, community citizens, business owners, and community organisations to submit their objections before 25 April 2025 to This email address is being protected from spambots. Your support is crucial in ensuring that private security service providers can continue to serve and protect their clients and the community effectively, as well as support SAPS. Let’s stand together to safeguard our right to safety and security.
Remember – YOU are safer with us! Help us protect you and those precious to you.
Yours sincerely
Gary and the ENTIRE KSS Team who work tirelessly to keep you and our community safe.!

Subject: Objection to Proposed Private Security Regulations
Dear PSIRA Regulations Team,
I am writing to formally object to the proposed amendments to the Private Security Industry Regulations, published on 28 March 2025. These changes will severely impact the effectiveness of private security service providers, putting civilians, businesses, homes, and public spaces at greater risk.
Restricting armed security personnel, imposing vague ammunition limits, and banning essential non-lethal tools will weaken security providers' ability to respond to crime and provide the necessary support and resources to assist SAPS. In a country facing high crime rates, these amendments do not enhance public safety.
I urge PSIRA to reconsider these amendments and engage with sensible industry stakeholders to ensure security regulations support, rather than hinder, the safety of all South African citizens.
Yours sincerely,

Rhinos need your vote - Vote today for Project Rhino
Local Non-Profit Organisation Project Rhino has been shortlisted for international funding from the European Outdoor Conservation Association. At a time where many organisations have lost international funding, this opportunity, if successful, would cover some much- needed rhino protection. The organisation was selected as one of sixteen finalists from hundreds of applications. Through a process of public voting, winners will be selected.
Project Rhino is appealing to all supporters to vote for them on https://www.eocaconservation.org/vote/ - voting opened on 31 March and runs until to 14 April. There are 3 categories in which the public are asked to vote – Project Rhino is in the second category.
“A vote for Project Rhino is a vote for the future of our rhinos. Winning the European Outdoor Conservation Association funding would be a lifeline for our conservation efforts, enabling us to intensify our fight against rhino poaching and protect these majestic creatures for generations to come," said Carlien Roodt, Director of Project Rhino.
Project Rhino Alliance NPC protects and preserves the white and black rhino populations of KwaZulu-Natal, recognizing that their survival is inextricably linked to the broader conservation of all wildlife. The organisation aims to create a safe haven for rhinos and other endangered species, ensuring the long-term health and prosperity of the planet's precious wildlife heritage.
Project Rhino protects the second-largest population of white and black rhinoceros in the world. Their footprint in KwaZulu Natal spans 28 game reserves and approximately 800,000 hectares. Since 2008, over 10,000 rhinos have been killed for their horns, supplying Asian market demand.
Funding would contribute to ongoing work, including coordinated anti-poaching interventions such as aerial surveillance and rapid response, K9 antipoaching dog and handler patrols, and removal of snares. In addition, the Alliance will engage community elders to teach and to learn from their wisdom, and deliver conservation education for youth and children to promote the value of wildlife conservation and address real world challenges faced by communities.

Regular vaccinations are crucial for your furry friends - Hilton Veterinary Hospital
For puppies and kittens, the initial vaccinations should start at 6 weeks of age, with follow-ups at 9 and 12 weeks. It’s important to complete this series to ensure maximum protection, especially in South Africa, where herd immunity is low and diseases like Parvovirus can spread easily. At 16 weeks it will be time for a Rabies booster and Leptospirosis vaccination.
Don't stop there—at around 6 months, both puppies and kittens should receive a booster to maintain their immunity and to reduce any gaps in immunity.
After this initial series, annual boosters are necessary to keep your pets safe throughout their lives.
At Hilton Vet Hospital, we’re here to guide you through the vaccination process to ensure your pets stay protected.

Respect the privilege of plantation access and remember dogs are safer on a leash in public spaces
This is an urgent appeal to all trail users to respect and obey closure signs of trails, roads, and depots that have been closed off due to timber harvesting and hauling operations. These trails and routes have been closed off for your own safety as timber operations are inherently dangerous and failure to abide by the rules could result in serious injury or worse.
In the last month we have had seven reported incidents of trail users disobeying trail closure signage and riding, walking or running through active timber operations. During one of these incidents a dog that was being walked off-leash ran at a chainsaw operator while they were busy cutting logs in an area that was closed off to trail users. This incident could have resulted in serious injury for either parties, but fortunately nobody was hurt.
We have to seriously reiterate that trail and route closures have to be obeyed at all times. If trail users are found to be in contravention of these regulations, there will be consequences, and harsh disciplinary action will be taken. Trespassing individuals will have their trail privileges revoked and legal action may be taken by the land owners, Sappi, if they so wish. Security patrols in these areas will be increased and trespassers will be detained.
We are privileged to be able to use these trails as they are on private land. If these contraventions of trail closures in active timber operations do not stop, then we may well be in a situation where our land access and trail privileges get revoked. This would be a very sad outcome as we know that the majority of trail users abide by the rules and we do not want a few individuals to ruin it for everyone else.
Once again, we are asking for all trail users to abide by the rules and respect the privilege we have of using this incredible land for everyone’s continued enjoyment.
We thank you for your understanding and co-operation
