After the AGM our new President is George Oldham. Dave Trickett, Thelma Mylne, Barry Collier and Chris Purchase remain on the committee and new members are Arthur Daugherty, Mike and Nina Guest and Fred Palmer. The Inter House Swimming Gala took place on 15 February 2016. This year's winners were once again Newnham House, who won the gala for the fourth consecutive year. The Spirit Shield was shared between Churchill House and Pearce House.

The past week was a very busy one at our club with normal tabs-in games on Tuesday, a competition and the AGM on Thursday, the Artisan’s 2-4-2 on Friday and Nominated Pairs matches all week-end. Bill’s Extra Bash on Thursday was won by Derick Hull, John Fowler and John Pluke. Runners-up were Fred Palmer, Dave Stevenson and Bev Davidge. Thanks to Bill Lambert for sourcing the prizes for this extra treat.

To celebrate the birthday of Scouting’s Founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, which was on 21 February, cubs and scouts around the globe wear their uniforms. Annually at Laddsworth Primary School we see a growing number of pupils joining this movement which teaches life skills; including how to be good citizens, learning ways to improve the world as well as indoor and outdoor challenges.

To mark World Wetland Day Grade 5 pupils at Laddsworth Primary School visited the neighbouring St Anne’s wetland where they observed wetland fauna and flora. They made good use of the bird hide from which they spotted red bishops, a hamerkop, swallows and mousebirds.
Fanele Mzangwe, an U10b cricketer at Laddsworth Primary School, was awarded a Trophy ball for taking a hat-trick during a recent cricket match against St. Charles.
The iThemba Projects Preschool in Sweetwaters now has 29 children enrolled and receiving quality Early Childhood instruction. This area of Sweetwaters previously did not have any ECD facility. Chrissie Van Niekerk, Vodacom Change the World Volunteer with iThemba Projects, continues to lead this aspect of the NPO's work. “Last year was all about the push to get the preschool open,” says Chrissie. “Now my focus is on transforming the preschool into a true centre of excellence.” As a centre of excellence, the preschool will host trainings and support groups for teachers, as well as be a resource library and a place where local teachers can see quality ECD in action. The preschool is also currently the base for a toy-lending library for parents. This toy library has been stocked by generous donations from Epworth and other local schools. Through iThemba’s programmes, local parents are able to “check out” quality educational toys to use at home during the week.

Grace College pupil, Michael Van Wyngaard in Grade 11, participated in a Drakensberg Grand Traverse over the December holidays, covering a route of approximately 297km. Aged 14 years and 10 months at the time, he broke the record for being the youngest person to complete this journey. The previous record, which has stood since 1997, was 15years and 2 months. The group also broke the record for most summits reached on a Drakensberg Grand Traverse – a total of 67, compared to the previous 63. Well done, Michael!
