Laddsworth pupils took part in the Hilton College Trail Run, on Sunday 10 February 2019.

Tayla Street, a Grade 3 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, took part in the Hermannsburg Mudman Triathlon on Saturday 2 February in Hermannsburg.

 

Tayla received a Gold Medal for finishing first in the Under 9 Age Group.

Laddsworth Primary School’s First Team Cricket boys have been waiting patiently to play a cricket match, as their first two matches of the year were cancelled due to rain.

9pm Cheryl Joelson

Cheryl is a singer/songwriter. She started singing and performing from the age of nine and spent several years singing in studio as a session singer. Cheryl draws on her life experiences to craft poetry that forms the lyrical basis of her heartfelt and memorable songs, her style of music can be described as folk/rock with hints of country. Her style has been compared with that of Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, Civil Wars, Cranberries and Taylor Swift.

 

The South African Duo Connecting Stars was officially launched by Cheryl in 2012, creating her own brand of Folk Rock. Since 2013, Connecting Stars have gained success locally as well as abroad, with their debut South African single "Pieces" receiving radio play across the country, and their song "Stuck" achieving the rare feat of charting on the US Billboard AC chart, peaking at #28. This was followed by two tours of the United States, and culminated in Cheryl winning the Songwriter of the Year Award at the Texas Sounds International Country Music Awards. Cheryl also collaborated with Headliner and Rasadon, the founding members of the multi-grammy award winning band “Arrested Development” and wrote a song together called “A Change is Coming”.

 

Cheryl recently performed with Nibs Van Der Spuy at his album launch, Natalia and has performed with Tresor, Riziky and John Ellis.

 

8pm The Name On The Drum

The Name On The Drum is an alternative rock, folk and indie band that focuses on playing original music, but also insert a variety of covers into their live shows. Playing as a two or a three piece band and varying their sound from full electric to simple acoustics, The Name On The Drum uses all the tools at their disposal to create a unique blend of honest, thought provoking song-writing with absorbing musical performances.

 

With influences that include, Rise Against, Bob Dylan, Frightened Rabbit and The National, their song writing also creates awareness of current world issues.

When the band was formed in 2011 the plan was to have a different 'name on the drum' at each performance, now they simply go by "The Name On The Drum" or "TNOTD". Band members are Ben Bruzas (guitar, vocals), Liam Barnard (bass) and Nat Bruzas (drums, vocals).

 

Based in Hillcrest, TNOTD have played shows around KZN, including La Casa (PMB), The Winston Pub (DBN), The Rock Music Bistro (Umzumbe), Music in The Hills (MiTH, Hilton), Jack Rabbits (Morningside), Amsterdam Bar (DBN), The Bus Stop (DBN), as well as other venues. TNOTD has also performed at various Music Festivals - Splashy Fen (2017), Pecanwood Oktoberfest (2016), Ales For Tails, Roseway Waldorf’s Musical Moonlight Market and Organic Market, Monteseel Music Fest, Outland Festival open mic (2016).

 

7pm Hyde and the Resistance

Hyde and the Resistance is a three-piece rock band from Durban. We draw influence from The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Switchfoot, Muse and many others. They emerged as a four-piece band in 2013. Preston Ellapen does duty on guitar and Shannon Pillay on drums. Princeton Ellapen is on Bass but in 2015 Shannon injured his hand in an accident and was replaced by Joash Pillay. Hyde and Resistance played only two more gigs before calling it quits. In October 2018 Preston, Princeton and Joash played together for a church youth function. While practising for this event Clarion (the guitarist from when Hyde and the Resistance was a 4 piece) requested that Hyde and the Resistance open for his album launch on 25 November. This prompted the band to regroup and begin practising old material. They’ve had so much fun practising these old songs and realized that wanted to record them. Their goal now is to play these songs in as many live shows as we can and to record so we can leave a legacy. Hyde and the Resistance have played alongside bands such as AKing, Dance You’re on Fire, Squeal and many others.

The majority of crime is still opportunistic, as people are careless about leaving items visible from the road, garage doors open and out-buildings unprotected. There have however been incidents of forced break-ins through front doors.

Jack Jennings, a Grade Three pupil at Laddsworth Primary School has been selected to play for the KwaZulu-Natal Baseball team.

9pm James Grace

James Grace is one of one South Africa’s leading concert artists. In recent years he has appeared with the Cape Philharmonic, the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic, the Johannesburg Festival, the Johannesburg Philharmonic and the Free State Symphony in concerti by Rodrigo, Villa–Lobos, Giuliani and Vivaldi.

 

James studied at the Royal College of Music in London as a Foundation Scholar with Carlos Bonell. Upon graduating he became the first guitarist in the history of the College to receive the Tagore Gold Medal, an annual award presented to the most outstanding student. After spending two years in Doha, in the Arabian State of Qatar where he taught guitar at an International Music Centre, James returned to South Africa and was appointed Head of Classical Guitar Studies at the University of Cape Town. This year James has toured throughout South Africa, the U.A.E and Zimbabwe.

 

James has recently released his sixth solo album, Chilled, under his own record label, Stringwise Records. His previous two releases Sevilla – Music of Spain II and Café Latino both topped the Classic Fm Top 20 South African Charts and earned James SAMA nominations for Best Popular Classical Album and Best Instrumental Album respectively.

 

In January 2019 Christopher Duigan's Music Revival KZN invites James Grace to perform for KZN audiences in a series of duo (piano and guitar) and solo performances including the launch of his new CD "Andaluza : Music of Spain III”. CDs will be on sale.

 

8pm Brian Bedingfield

Brian Bedingfield (of Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters infamy) showcases his new solo project, called Finger Trouble, with some help from friends old and new. Appropriating a cheeky subtitle from the past into the MiTH logo as a pretext, Brian will interlace his performance with stories about life, the universe and songwriting. Oh and by the way, MiTH is a great place to gather, and listen to live music, so if you haven't yet been, make the trip to Hilton - you won't be disappointed. This particular evening has a really interesting and varied line-up, so get there early to bag a good seat.

 

7:30pm Byron Love

Born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, Byron started out on the local Pietermaritzburg pub circuit just after completing his compulsory “national service.” He has been gigging ever since, with stints in Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Ballito, Margate, and the South Coast. Byron performs covers and also writes his own material. His first album, The Byron Love Consortium – Free Rebel, was released in Sept. 2013. We look forward to welcoming this all-round nice guy back to the MiTH stage.

 

7pm Sivan Cruywagen

Sivan is currently a grade 12 student at GHS in Pietermaritzburg, and has been singing since she was eight years old. Her genre is classic soul, with covers from London Grammar, Adele, James Arthur, Lana Del Ray and others. She is currently working on some original songs with Sharl - her guitarist. An aspiring musician with a warm, acoustic sound, Sivan is making her way in the midlands music scene, and has performed various venues on request.

St Anne’s Swimmer, Georgina Butcher, competed at the 2018 KZN Champs and received three Gold medals for the 50m, 100m and 200m Breaststroke in her age group events.

 

She also received a Silver medal for the Open 100m Breaststroke and Bronze in the Open 50m Breaststroke.

 

Georgie has been invited to attend the overseas swimming tour with the Seals Club to the United States from 14 June – 5 July this year.
