St Anne's take Pietermaritzburg North Regional SPAR KZN Hockey Challenge

On Saturday 14 March, two more teams earned places at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge. First to secure their place was host school, St Anne’s College who were victorious in the Pietermaritzburg Northern Regional followed by Epworth School in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional.

In a repeat of their round-robin clash, St Anne’s met Howick High School in a 7-nil victory for the Pietermaritzburg North title. The two teams faced each other in the first game of their regionals. Howick High then knuckled down and dusted off their loss, going up against Voortrekker High School and Grace College.

Howick ran out of steam after playing a pearler against one-time winner, The Wykeham Collegiate in the last game of the round-robin. Howick defended like pros letting in an early Wykeham goal, midway through the round-robin game, they had an opportunity down the other side which they made sure they knocked in to equalize. The remainder of the game they held strong, not allowing Wykeham any space giving them a chance to have a run in the final against St Anne’s.

St Anne’s opened their account with a spin and slot in from Lusanda Mtshali, who netted the first with less than 2 minutes on the clock. Racking up the goals after Mtshali started the ball rolling, Gabbi Benkenstein scored two, Storm Veenstra added one to her teams tally and Georgie Romer-Lee knocked in a magnificent hat-trick of goals.

In the Central Regional, Epworth kept a clean sheet in their six games. The second team to make it to the regional final was decided on goal difference. Both Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High and St John’s D.S.G. had near-mirror image results. With wins for both against Russel High School, Alexandra High School and Carter High School. Both went down to Epworth 1 nil and drew nil nil in the game against each other. The goal difference was the decider with Girls’ High netting a total of 21 goals and St John’s 20.

In the second Epworth Girls’ High game, Epworth owned the territory with 90% of play taking place in the Girls’ High half. Epworth preserved with their attacks throughout the twenty minutes but the last line of defence, keeper Manelisi Gwala was defiant. Deflecting missiled flicks from short corners, warding away rockets with magnificent soccer skills, she held strong.

In a last gasp attack, Epworth’s Fia de Bruyn hugged the post as she deflected the ball from a determined pass from the right. On the whistle, Epworth managed to win the game and the regional title for the third time. The defending champs reactions were electric amid a brewing electric storm above.

Two umpires were acknowledged for their determined efforts with the whistle throughout the day, Solulwe Bless from the Central Regional and Lorimer O’Bree from Howick High for North Regional.

No idle talk, MGF Attorneys fill potholes and cut verge all in a week

Now they have been repairing potholes in Vlei Road creating a safer surface for all heading their way. A deafening round of applause to them.

SA's COVID-19 patient zero diagnosed in Hilton, KZN

covid19 in hilton kznSouth Africa’s patient zero has been diagnosed with the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Hilton, KZN, South Africa by local GP, Dr Reed. According to neighbourhood WhatsApp groups, the patient returned from a skiing holiday in Italy on 1 March 2020 and visited Dr Reed on 3 March 2020 where swabs were taken. All reports indicate that the family's behaviour has been geared to contain the spread of the virus. We wish the patient a fast and full recovery.
 
The practice remains open but Dr Reed is still in isolation and doing well with no signs of the virus. Dr Stewart is away on leave and Dr Bruce is available for consultations.

Craig Millar, a local DA councillor cautioned the community to remain calm, ‘As many residents would have heard, there has been a case of COVID19 diagnosed in Hilton. I would like to appeal to residents to remain calm and take note of some very good information from the Western Cape Provincial Government website, particularly those pertaining to prevention. Any information I get from the relevant authorities will be passed on via the numerous social media channels we subscribe to locally.’

Laddsworth Umgungundlovu Midlands Tennis Team

Laddsworth tennisLaddsworth pupils Grade 7 pupils Jodi Moreno, Adam Tilbury, Patrick Lamb and Joshua Tilbury (non-travelling reserve) were selected for the Umgungundlovu Midlands Tennis Team.
 
They took part in the KwaZulu-Natal Tennis Tournament at Westridge Tennis Stadium, in Durban, from 28 February to 1 March 2020.

COVID-19 at ground zero in SA

covid19It has been just over a week since the first South African to have COVID-19 was diagnosed in Hilton by Dr Reed.
 
Basic information at a time when we all need to be calm and practical is imperative. The best defence we seem to have at present is to employ social-distancing, sensible all-around hygiene and 20 second long handwashes interspersed with hand sanitiser in an attempt to delay the spread of COVID-19. In between handwashing do not touch your face.
 
More about social distancing, because there are cowboys out there who seem bent on challenging their own invincibility. Keep a 1,5m to 2m distance between yourself and other people as much as possible. No hugging, kissing, shaking hands or any other skin to skin contact on greeting. Respect the cues from the people you meet, do not force any physical contact on them but instead thank them for honouring your space.
 
Travellers may have to face anything from self-isolation to institutional quarantines depending on where they are in the world.
 
Local Doctors have requested that if you fear you may be infected with the coronavirus, you should call the surgery to receive a consultation over the phone and do not physically consult your doctor. A visit to the surgery puts many people at risk unnecessarily.
 
Many local businesses have been proactive in placing hand sanitiser out for customers to use, but the responsibility is yours. When you head out think about the protective measures you can take and behave accordingly.

9pm - Cactus Club

KRISTEN KONING BAND
The Kristen Koning Band is an alternative folk band that formed in the KZN Midlands in June 2019. The band is composed of Kristen Koning on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Skippy Khubeka on lead guitar, Dev van Rooyen on bass, and Nerissa Pillay on back-up vocals. They perform original music written by Kristen, as well as covers, in Afrikaans and English, gaining inspiration from artists like Mumford and Sons, Arctic Fire, Tame Impala, and Kings of Leon.

The band’s debut performance at The Valley Open Mic, Crossways, was received warmly by an audience of supporters and fellow musicians. They are currently taking part in the Liberty Midlands Mall Battle of the Bands, and will be performing at the mall on the 3rd of August 2019. Their next performance is at Music in the Hills on 31 July at the Knoll Guest House, Hilton. 

8pm - The Reid Family Band

The Reid Family Band has been years in the making, jamming together since the kids were small. Vincent Reid has had an interest in music from a young age and is mainly self-taught. He plays keyboard, guitar and recently tin whistle. Rhiannon has just finished matric and with the help of Kech Sanchez, she has honed her skills on guitar and sings lead vocals. Younger brother Aidan showed musical abilities from the time he was knee-high and also sings. Tess organises the bookings and joins in on vocals and percussion, when possible. The Reid Family Band enjoys many different genres of music but is particularly influenced by Irish, Folk and Pop music.

7pm - Ilan Lax

During the day, Ilan Lax is a legal professional consulting on human rights, environmental, land and development law; governance and organisational development and working as an adjudication specialist. But Ilan's other persona is a soulful, poetic musician who performs folk-rock, including ballads and original material, with deep emotion. His natural charm and obvious musical talent make him a pleasure to listen to.

Take the N3 to Hilton, take the Hilton turnoff and go South into the Village (away from Hilton College). Travel 5,2km along Hilton Avenue (past two sets of traffic lights and Crossways Pub) and keep going straight as Hilton Avenue turns into Dennis Shepstone Drive. At the 5,2km mark, Knoll Drive will be on your right – the entrance to MiTH is the *second* entrance on your left into The Knoll Historic Guest Farm.

St Anne’s College: Saturday 14 March
 
St Anne’s College plays host to the upcoming SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge this coming weekend, whereby both the Pietermaritzburg Central and Northern Regionals will be played on their two astro turfs.
 
With home turf advantage, host school St Anne’s College will hope that they can continue their dominance in the Pietermaritzburg Northern Regional. They will take on Howick High School, Treverton, Grace College, Voortrekker High School and The Wykeham Collegiate. The games will all be 25 minutes one way running time.
 
Across the way defending champions, Epworth School will be keen to take their third title in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional. They will meet Alexander High, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, St John’s D.S.G., Maritzburg Christian School and Carter High School. The games will be 20 minutes one way running time.
 
Both regionals will have a round robin format. The Pietermaritzburg Northern’s top two teams will face each other on in their regional final at 2.40pm. Ten minutes later the top two teams will take to their turf to duel it out for the honours in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional.
 
Only two teams have represented the northern region of Pietermaritzburg at the Grand Finals. St Anne’s have raised the trophy eight times and The Wykeham Collegiate had their name engraved on the trophy in 2012. Three teams have travelled to Durban in July. Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High dominated the area for six times, with St John’s winning once, and Epworth hunting their third title this weekend.
 
Both tournaments will award 4 points for a win, a draw with goals will earn 2 points and a goalless draw only 1 point. A loss will be logged as zero points for the losing team.
 
The two teams to win will join three teams that have already earned a spot at the Grand Finals that will take place in July at St Marys DSG. The first team to secure a spot is newcomers from Vryheid, Hoërskool Pionier from the Northern KZN Regional. Second team that will make an appearance at the Grand Finals for a tenth time is Durban Girls’ College representing the Durban Central Regional. The third team, back again after a year’s gap is Our Lady of Fatima from the Durban North Regional.

Right brain thinkers, referred to by researchers as visual-spatial learners, are very intelligent and creative thinkers whose learning ability is often misunderstood and undervalued in school because the skills that are required in order to do well, are mostly left brain sequential skills.
 
The right hemisphere doesn’t think or learn in the same way as the left hemisphere and, as a result, many visual spatial leaners struggle in one or more areas of the academic curriculum, usually with reading, written work and/or classroom maths and formal assessments. For many of them, the frustration and struggle of trying to think, learn and show what they know through left-brain skills, and the negative feedback they get when they don’t succeed, leads to anxiety and low self-esteem and results in them becoming withdrawn or, alternatively, being labelled “naughty” or “attention seeking” in the classroom.
 
The good news is that there are solutions. With your support and belief in them as learners, and your help and guidance, they can find out and understand who they are as learners. Then, working hard to embrace and use their right-brain skills when studying and doing their homework, they can develop the ability to succeed and become independent learners. To illustrate this, I share with you a testimony from the mother of a visual, spatial learner as well as some of the skills of a right brain dominant thinker. As a parent, your understanding of exactly how your child thinks and learns, and your advocacy for their way of learning, can make a huge difference in their daily lives. Let’s help them learn joyfully!
