The James Edward project is a collaboration of some of SA’s finest artists.

James Edward has been in the music industry for the greater part of 20 years. “Eyes of Sunglasses”, the first single off his debut EP hit No.1 on the SA Top 40 on Mix FM last year. He has written and performed as James Robertson as a member of Spoonfeedas, a multi-charting South African group achieving number 1 on 5fm as well as other charting singles in the Top 10 and Top 20.

He then went on to form Cubic Inch and again enjoyed radio popularity and opened for Bryan Adams on his tour to South Africa. After this, he formed Serrotone along with Peter Guthrie and Billy Kruger and they have performed alongside Freshly Ground, Prime Circle, and Wonderboom, to name a few.

Billy Kruger is the man behind the drums. He is arguably Durban’s finest drummer with a wealth of experience having studied under Mark Temporado and playing both locally and internationally. Sharing the stage with Delirious in Holland has been one of the highlights of his career.

Hylton Blignaut is a master on bass guitar with many years of experience in the music scene having played in multiple bands (most recently with Stormy Monday and Amplified Heat) as a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist.

Joining them on lead guitar is Rogan Ward. Rogan has played for bands like Caffeine Substitute as well as New Flying Machine in Cape Town and rounds this four-piece off perfectly.


7:35 pm: Eastenders

Rudi Engelbrecht (Benoni) and Charles Webster (Kensington) grew up to the East of Johannesburg, Gauteng. Now they’re both firmly entrenched in the Midlands music scene, and ready to bring you a sneak preview of some Simon and Garfunkel tunes from an upcoming show they’re involved in. Come and try the apéritif!


7pm: Bridgitt Leahy

Bridgitt is an acoustic artist who grew up in a small town called Creighton where she was surrounded by her dad’s music and singing. This inspired her to pick up a guitar at 15 years old. With a passion for indie, folk, alternative, and country, she has always found inspiration in the unique sounds and stories that these genres offer.

She draws inspiration from artists such as Bob Dylan, Rodriguez, and Bon Iver. Although she took a break from performing for the past few years, Bridgitt is now eagerly preparing to once again share her passion with an audience. This will be Bridgitt's second outing at MiTH for 2024 - she blew us away last time and she has graciously agreed to share her prodigious talents as another performer had to drop out for personal reasons.

In a major film industry collaborative effort Climate Story Lab South Africa, Doc Society – Climate Story Unit, STEPS, and the Global Impact Producers Alliance (GIPA) presents the Climate Focus at this year’s Durban FilmMart which takes place from 19 to 22 July.

Climate Focus promises stimulating sessions to seek tangible approaches to communicate the climate-crisis through film with panel discussions, hands-on dialogues around potential impact strategies to effect change through film, brainstorming sessions, and networking opportunities for film industry participants creating content for this sector.

Emily Wanja, who is Director of African Programmes at Doc Society - Climate Story Unit, says, “This climate focus at DFM is part of Climate Story Unit’s commitment to support transformative storytelling that advances a climate just and biodiverse future by storytellers, impact producers, and movement builders. Collectively we can envision, experiment and share how an abundant world for all could look like. DFM provides an opportunity to strengthen partnerships across the information ecosystem on the continent for this work to thrive.”

Filmmakers and activists, in an invigorating panel titled Don’t Stop Talking About Climate Chaos! discuss the role creatives play in sounding the alarm on the climate crisis, and inspiring effective action, including the building of African climate movements. Nasreen Al Amin (Climate Story Lab Lagos), Kudzayi Ngwerume (UMI Fund), Pete Murimi (BBC Africa Eye), Simeon Letoole (Human Rights Activist) and Kumi Naidoo on video (Activist and former Director of Greenpeace) feature with moderators Anita Khanna (Human Rights Media Trust/Uhuru Productions) and Emily Wanja (Doc Society - Climate Story Unit).

In the session titled Partnerships and Pathways to Reach Audiences, the need for collective focus and political will to effectively address climate change is unpacked and paralleled with the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa, where miscommunication, denialism, and fake news hindered efforts to change behaviour and create impactful solutions. The progress in reducing HIV/AIDS-related deaths was achieved through collective efforts. The panel will address how the climate crisis needs a similar collective effort from all sectors including filmmakers through innovative partnerships with funders, broadcasters, and alternative distribution models, decentralised to unlock impactful audience reach.

Nadine Cloete (NFVF), James Smart (Nation Media Group), Pete Murimi (BBC Africa Eye), Noel Kok (NEWF), Nonto Sibanyoni (Sunshine Cinema), Theresa Hill/Tiny Mungwe (STEPS) and Cindy Makandi (Tunga Afrika) feature here with Miki Redelinghuys (Climate Story Lab ZA) as moderator.

In practical tool-kit styled approach the session Impact Strategy in Action, aims to equip impact producers with the insights necessary to create effective impact strategies. The panel will explore key issues such as identifying target audiences, setting measurable goals, leveraging partnerships, and maximising impact through media and outreach efforts.

Tiny Mungwe (STEPS) moderates this session which features Emily Wanja (Thank You For The Rain Impact Producer), Rumbi Katedza (Transactions Director) and Anita Khanna (Temperature Rising Co-Director).

Well-known impact producers and strategists Liani Maasdorp (Climate Story Lab ZA), Emily Wanja (Doc Society - Pictured here above), Nasreen Al Amin (Climate Story Lab Lagos) and Tiny Mungwe feature on the panel in the Impact Hackathon moderated by Miriam Ayoo (Global Impact Producers Alliance). Here one of the Africa Labs Showcase projects which has been working with mentors during the DFM, will participate in a high-energy, interactive session to unpack the impact potential of the film.

Aspiring impact producers will also have an opportunity to connect with GIPA members at a session at the DFM, to find out more about joining GIPA which nurtures the work of the unique, often overlooked, but powerful community of impact producers.

In a practical session Who’s Watching Our Films? Alternative Distribution Mapping, Doc Society - Climate Story Unit, CSL ZA, STEPS, DOCA, TUNGA Afrika partner in a session moderated by Cindy Makandi (Tunga Afrika) to ignite an initiative they have started to help film industry professionals to unlock both existing, new and effective distribution pathways to ensure stories reach the people they are meant for. In this session they will map out alternative distribution avenues that extend beyond conventional routes. The goal is to create an open-source model that filmmakers can use to discover viable distribution partners across the continent.

Award-winning impact producer Anita Khanna, (Uhuru Productions), says, “It's shocking how little attention is being given to the biggest threat humanity has ever faced, but we know as activists that this is often because people face many challenges that are more immediate to them. If we can use our artistry and our campaigns to, at the very least, keep people fully informed of what the climate emergency means to them, and at most, get people motivated to organise around climate demands, then we will see some serious movement. It's a thing that artists have done in the past, around vital social matters, we need to be doing it now, on steroids."

8:45 pm: The Gloucester Blues Project

Formed in 2005, the Gloucester Blues Project is a four-piece blues-rock band from KwaZulu-Natal known for a solid repertoire that ranges from background blues, to upbeat classics. Appearing on stages from KZN to the Okavango Delta (and even in the occasional cowshed (ask them about it), the band is known for their energetic, lengthy sets. They draw influences from early blues pioneers like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, electric guitar gods Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix, and more rock-based outfits like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.

The Gloucester Blues Project plays regularly in KwaZulu-Natal and has enjoyed performing with the likes of Dan Patlansky, Southern Gypsey Queen and Josie Field. The band has represented the blues at major South African festivals including Splashy Fen, the Durban International Blues Festival, and the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg. They have occupied stages at a host of smaller music venues across South Africa, as well as toured to Botswana twice where they were joined on stage by local singer Robyn Tompkins.

The band has also performed in tribute shows dedicated to popular musical icons Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Rolling Stones. These shows were very well received, with audiences demanding repeat performances.

The Gloucester Blues Project consists of Mark McTaggart on bass and vocals, John Goodall on rhythm guitar, blues harp, and vocals, Andrew Dickinson on lead guitar, and Ian Dickinson on drums. After a four-year break, in 2024 they have been performing reunion gigs, chiefly in the Durban area. Gloucester Blues looks forward to revisiting MiTH this July. (Top image)

Essentials is a band from Pietermaritzburg made up of guitarist and lead vocalist Judgement Cele, keyboard player and backup vocalist Wandile Mfusi, drummer Kingdom Cele, and bassist Asande Nene. The four-piece band formed at the end of September 2023. Their arrangements borrow from rock, gospel, pop and roots rock reggae. (Image below)

From KZN, Aroura (aka Madison Fisher) is an energetic solo artist influenced by various bands, from Mumford and Sons, and Milky Chance to Noah Kahan. Aroura plays covers and original songs, some well-known and others not-so-well-known, ranging from acoustic to indie and country genres. Aroura is a singer/guitar player who will have you singing along. Aroura has only played on stage once before and looks forward to her second time at MiTH.

Today we learned of the passing of Danny Veness, husband to Di for 57 years, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father figure, fitness instructor, mentor and more. This well-known and well-loved legend has left great big empty boots, along with innumerable good memories that will bring comfort and lasting encouragement to all who knew and loved him.  

 

Everyone is welcome to attend the open memorial service for Daniel Issac Veness, taking place on Tuesday 16 July 2024, from 10h30 at Hilton Christian Fellowship Church.

Don't Panic! SADAG shares coping tools for Panic Disorder

July the 10th marks the annual commemoration of Panic Awareness Day. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) dedicates this day to increase awareness and destigmatize Panic Disorder by spreading knowledge and having important conversations on common myths and how one can effectively manage panic attacks. This week, SADAG will be hosting three Live discussions on various online platforms where we will be engaging with experts in the field, with the goal of offering assistance to individuals impacted by debilitating panic attacks. These events are intended to reassure people impacted with Panic Disorder that there is help and support, and that it is a treatable condition.

SADAG’s Founder, Zane Wilson, shares her own lived experience, “I lived through undiagnosed Panic Disorder for more than 10 years. For anyone who has experienced it, you would understand how suffering Panic Attacks can be both terrifying and debilitating. In my case, the Panic Attacks became more and more frequent. The sweaty palms, chills and shakes got so bad that it eventually had taken over my life, where I could no longer drive on my own or even stay at home alone.”

Join the SADAG team for a stimulating Webinar on ‘Calm in Crisis’ on Wednesday, July 10, at 18:30 to 19:30. Host Nkini Phasha (SADAG Board Member), joined by Dr Colinda Linde (SADAG Board Chairperson and Specialist Clinical Psychologist) and Zane Wilson (SADAG Founder) will discuss useful coping skills and helpful advice. Attempted Theft of Motor Vehicle warning from UCSI

It seems that the motor vehicle theft criminals are making their way into the uMngeni area. I have received two reports of high-end vehicle attempted thefts yesterday. We were lucky this time, both case the criminals were disturbed, one alarm and one, witnesses arriving in car park.

Please be aware of your vehicle in parking lots and please make sure your anti-theft protection is up to date and active. Do a test on the tracking unit and make sure tracking key fob batteries are working.
