The Hilton Car Show launches at Grace College

Jayce Lane, our Vice Chairman of the Grace College Parents’ Association, is often seen on the roads in and around Hilton driving his 1967 Dodge Monaco. This vehicle was assembled in Elsies Rivier just outside of Cape Town and fitted with a 6.3l V8 engine which was manufactured by Chrysler South Africa.

Chesco is predominantly a theatre writer and performer; he learnt the sweat nectar of sound on a classical guitar and has been a cunning fret board adventurer ever since. Influenced by old timely blues and the birth of cool jazz has giving birth to some funked up originals and a mix of folk and old rock covers. Let’s do some sound!
 
8.00pm – APPETITE FOR DISTRUCTION
Appetite for Distruction are a band of 3 guys Hushern on bass/vocals, Codey on drums Prithesh on lead/vocals . We play different types of rock and so because it's our first time at the MITH we will surprise you with the choice of songs we will have scheduled.
 
9.00pm – CALICO
Calico have a mixture of influences from funk to blues and indie to alt-rock, even a bit of grunge, but we are definitely rooted in rock. We plan to cover all these genres in our set with covers from: The Black Keys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Biffy Clyro, Cage the Elephant and Incubus. We will also be doing about 3 of our own originals, which have a mixture of sounds from fuzzy soft rock, to blues and grunge with a touch of funk. Our band name is Calico. We basically just all got together, jammed and decided to create some tasty new sounds.

Laddsworth pupils receive KZN Union Colours for Gymnastics

kzn gymnasticsTwo Laddsworth Grade 4 pupils; Ellen Oosthuizen and Kendra Tongue, both Level 2: Under 10 category, were awarded KwaZulu-Natal Union colours for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.
 
They have been selected to represent KwaZulu–Natal at the Inter Provincial Gymnastics North Zone Festival for Levels 1 – 3 from 23 to 24 June 2017 in Johannesburg.

kss logoAlmost 99% of all fires are caused by human negligence. They are mostly caused by electrical faults or carelessness. Cigarettes, matches and lighters, candles, heating appliances and open braai fires can all cause fires if not carefully monitored. But it is not only human error that causes fires. Environmental factors such as changing weather patterns and urban spread increase the risk of fires, with the effects and level of damage often being felt more severely.
 
To prevent the loss of lives and property, everyone needs to be aware of the dangers of fire, especially during fire season this winter. Here are some tips to stay fire safe:
• Always extinguish fires and safely dispose of hot ash, coal and cigarettes.
• Ensure that your electrical appliances are correctly wired.
• Don’t overload power points and switch off appliances when not in use.
• Make sure gas appliances are correctly installed.
• Keep the area around your home clear of flammable materials (dry bush, scrub etc...
• Never leave an open fire unattended (braai, in the fireplace at home, garden refuse etc...)
• Always make sure that you are alert in the kitchen when cooking and don’t leave the stove unattended.
• Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan.
• Clean the lint filter of your tumble dryer each and every time you use it.
• Take extra care when using heaters and electric blankets. Do not leave them on unattended.
• Always work in an open, cleared area when working with power tools.
• Buy a small fire extinguisher from a reputable dealer to keep in your home – note the correct way to use it and ensure that it has not expired.
• Familiarize yourself with emergency numbers in the event of a fire and medical emergency OR call the KSS 24/7 Control Room on +27 (0)33 3305911.

Born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, Byron started out on the local Pietermaritzburg pub circuit just after completing his compulsory “national service.” He has been gigging ever since, with stints in Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Ballito, Margate, and the South Coast. Byron performs covers and also writes his own material. His 1st album, The Byron Love Consortium – Free Rebel, was released in Sept. 2013, and he is presently in the studio working on his 2nd, which is an experiment with atmospheric acoustic music.
 
8.00pm – THE EDEN ROCK BLUES BAND
 
Led by Paul Arthur, the Eden Rock Blues Band is a traditional blues-rock band that performs a strongly drum-and-bass-driven repertoire with Paul himself providing excellent, raspy vocals, searing lead breaks and properly bluesy electric rhythm in-between. More recently, keys have been added – often in the form of Hammond organ. Paul travels between South Africa and Australia on a regular basis, so don’t miss this chance to hear one of the best blues outfits around, while he’s in the country.
 
9.00pm – NOT FAT JUST FLUFFY
 
Not fat, just fluffy is a band born and bred in Durban, and was formed in February 2015. Having gone by various names, 'Not fat, just fluffy" was decided upon because, well, the members are, in fact, not fat - and arguably fluffy. They play several genres and major influences include The Raconteurs, Black Pistol Fire, Yellow card, and The Audition. Band members include Jasmin Pillai on lead vocals and guitar, Garryd Smit on lead guitar, Tasha Smith on keyboard and backup vocals and Jordan Pillai on Drums.

Matt is a young musician born and bred in Pietermaritzburg - but already deeply embedded in local music. It has always been a dream of his to turn his passion for music into his career. He began playing guitar towards the end of his junior school years when he watched his father playing, and was eager to learn. He began his music career by partaking in musical productions at his school, Maritzburg College. He moved on to being one of the acts on the line-ups to open for the likes of Matthew Mole, Prime Circle, Desmond and the Tutus, Just Jinjer, Majozi and Plush. He describes his music as Indie Folk with a slight Rock undertone, with a few of his influences being Mumford and Sons, Matthew Mole and John Mayer.

Are a strong Latino Ethnic force. Their music is energetic and infectious to the ear and guaranteed to get you up and dancing.Lead by Bolivian “real deal Latino” Kéch (Eufronio) Sánchez on vocals, guitar, pan pipes, flutes and charango. The rest of the tribe are:
- Abbo Hall on bass, holding down the grooving Latin bass lines.
- Daniël Rossouw on lead, rhythm guitar. Latin infused and blended with other flavours, his colours add to Pan Latino’s unique sound.

The Hilton Pre-Primary Moonlight Market 2017

moonlight market logo250x220Hilton Pre-Primary will be having it's annual "Moonlight Market" this coming Thursday the 29th of June. It will be held from 5-8pm at the school in Vlei road, Hilton. Its a fundraising event, which we so look forward to as it enables us to interact with not only the Hilton community but with those who brave the cold to be warmed up by the joyous atmosphere. It's a real family outing with lots to keep the kids entertained and allow mom and dad to mingle and shop for some early Christmas gifts or unique items for the home. We have had a terrific response from vendors wishing to participate and its such a privilege to be able to host such a market and see the terrific talent people posses. Its also wonderful to have a host of new vendors this year, which brings much variety and a freshness to the market. There will be loads of quality stalls with numerous home made goodies and expert craftsmanship on display. We have bead work, pottery, wooden toys, kids & Adults clothing, crochet items, scrumptious biscuits and Belgium chocolates, organic meat, biltong, deserts, pancakes, candy floss and much more. Adults pay R5 to enter & kids are free. Dress warmly and come and enjoy an evening of great fun!

The Ashburton Aloe Festival 2017

aloesThe Ashburton Aloe Festival will be held over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd July in the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy, 10 km east of Pietermaritzburg. An annual event borne out of the close-knit communities passion for conserving this beautiful bushveld environment, six venues are open to the public, between 09h00 and 17h00, to enjoy a full programme of walks and talks amidst bushveld setting of the beautiful wild, giant flowering Aloe candelabrum. The event helps raise awareness for the conservation of both natural and cultural heritage, and raises funds for the protection of the plants and wildlife species of the area, as a living legacy for our children. The event is hosted by the Mpushini Valley Conservancy and showcases the Mpushini Protected Environment, the first such community conservation area in Kwazulu-Natal. The six venues include: Galago Farm, TopRock Farm, Impala Bend, Rocky Wonder Aloes Nursery, Spencer’s Place and the Hackland Aloe Garden. Things to do include: Specialist talks and walks, Self-Guided trails, Aloe, and indigenous plant sales including succulent, grasses, groundcovers, enjoy light music, browse a variety of stalls, including, crystal, mineral and gemstones, hot meals including vegetarian options, soups and home baked bread, tea garden, pancakes and refreshments, pony rides and the natural beauty, peace and tranquillity of this special hidden valley. Tickets are R30 per person and allow entry to all venues for the duration of the weekend. Children under 12 are free. There is a children’s art and environmental programme at venue 1 including child supervision at a nominal cost. Directions: take N3, Ashburton exit 69, Turn right, and continue 4 km onto D389, after the ticket sales booth, follow the signs to venues 1 – 5. To get to venue six, continue past venue 5 and proceed for 12 km as follows. After crossing the Msunduzi River, turn right at the junction of D389 towards Bishopstowe. Continue 2km and turn right. Continue for 2km and turn left at the signpost Rick Hackland Farm. After 50m turn right into the palm lined avenue to reach Femma and Rick Hackland’s Aloe Garden.
