Barn Owl journeys from Umgeni Vet to FreeMe on route to a new location
This juvenile was found trapped in Edendale hospital. After being captured, it was taken through to Umgeni Veterinary Clinic where it was given a full check-up.No injuries were found and the owl is fit and healthy. Unfortunately, we are unable to return this youngster back to the location it was found.
While we begin the search for the perfect release site, this Barn Owl has been fitted with a unique metal SAFRING identification ring and has been placed into an outdoor aviary.
We love what we do, and how we do it...❤

SPAR BELIEVES THE SA YOUTH SHOULD BE ABLE TO #LIVELIMITLESS
The global pandemic has locked down our youth during a time of their lives where they are desperately looking to spread their wings. The past 18 months have tested the country’s resolve and demonstrated the incredible resilience of all sections of the South African society.
While the South African youth’s wings have been clipped temporary, they have shown that they may be locked down, but they will not be held back.
As part of the 2021 SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge’s campaign, we encourage South African women to #LiveLimitless and break down the barriers in their lives and redefine the limits that may exist.
“What seemed impossible to us before has now become daily life—working from home and caring for our children at the same time? Impossible before, and now an average day,” said Alison Zweers, Managing Director of SPAR Western Cape.
“Making deals and holding meetings online? A strange and unknown concept that we now take in our stride. What further proof could you need to show that limitations are purely mental and how living without limits is truly possible.”
This year's theme has a strong focus on the youth, and we will be supporting the Petals Projects, which advocates for a shame-free education for all young women.
There is a stigma and shame attached to their menstrual cycle for many young girls in South Africa. Due to the lack of access to simple hygiene products, they must make the difficult decision between embarrassment or education.
There is a stigma and shame attached to their menstrual cycle for many young girls in South Africa. Due to the lack of access to simple hygiene products, they must make the difficult decision between embarrassment or education.
Entry fees for this year’s Virtual Challenge will support SPAR’s Petals Project, which aims to donate packs of sanitary pads to underprivileged girls removing one of the limitations to their education.
SPAR is also proud to partner with three young South African women who embody what it means to #LiveLimitless.
Chantel Struwig, Zizipho Soldati and Shirnell Swartz are three exceptional young women that refused to allow the challenges and limitations they had to deal with from an early age to define them. Instead, they have broken these shackles turning their challenges into opportunities.
Struwig, born with a purplish-red mark covering most of her face, has become a vocal and virtual birthmark awareness advocate. Embracing her birthmark, the BCom Fashion student has overcome a negative self-image and encourages others to do the same using her social media platforms.
The 26-year-old Soldati is an award-winning filmmaker, content creator, social media influencer and aspiring model. Soldati has not allowed a rare condition that causes very short limbs, called Phocomelia of the lower limbs, to put a limit on her dreams and ambitions.
Swartz has excelled as a short speed skater representing South Africa at the Special Olympics, which has helped her discover her superb talent. She first got involved with Special Olympics South Africa when she was 13 years old at Casa De Sol School, where she found short speed skating.
This year you will again be able to not only create your own race number online, but you can also create your own certificate of completion – check out sparvirtualchallenge.co.za and follow the few easy steps.
Entrants residing outside South Africa will unfortunately not receive a virtual challenge pack due to postal restrictions and courier fees. Your entry fee will still contribute by donating a pack of sanitary products for a schoolgirl in need.

Local Runner takes on Comrades Marathon barefoot to build a homeless shelter in Pietermaritzburg #RunForARoof
On the 13th of June 2021, Graham Wells (44) from Pelham in Pietermaritzburg, will take on his 7th Comrades Marathon.Running barefoot from Mooi River to Town Hill, Graham will dedicate his 90km virtual challenge to the plight of the growing homeless population in Pietermaritzburg.
“I'm a firm believer that running medals don't mean anything unless you have made a difference for someone else. ” says Graham.
Partnering with One Life Foundation, Graham has launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy called “Run for a roof”, to raise R250 000 towards the estimated R1 million needed to fund a much needed homeless shelter in the area.
“Whilst out training in the freezing cold mornings, I am always struck by the number of homeless in our city. As we complain about the weather getting colder, imagine what it must get like living on the street, in a park or on a field. These are normal people, like you and I, and for whatever reason, have found themselves in a difficult situation and, consequently, homeless.” says Graham.
Since the launch of his campaign, Graham has raised over R15 000 with kind contributions from 13 donors.
Funds raised will not only cover the cost to build the housing structure, but also provide the homeless with the appropriate rehabilitation services to re-build their own lives.
Having worked in social housing in the United Kingdom, helping the homeless has always been close to Graham’s heart.
“I have a dream to see a safe, friendly, people-centred shelter, in Pietermaritzburg, where people of any race or background can be welcomed and empowered to make something better of themselves. By coming together to fund this project we have an opportunity to change the face of homelessness in our City and restore dignity to those society has left behind. Everyone deserves kindness and a second chance” says Graham.

Dlalanathi's Child Protection Training
In Dlalanathi's Child Protection training with community members, we ask participants to map the safe and unsafe spaces in their community. This activity serves to raise adult's awareness in a very concrete way of where there may be risks to children's safety, and opens up a conversation about what could be done to mitigate risks. It also enables people to see the resources and strengths that already exist in the community and work from that strength-base.For more information please email This email address is being protected from spambots. Molotsane the epitome of how to Live Limitless
Kesa Molotsane will continue her proud association with the SPAR Women’s Challenge, from leading in the front during race day to shining in the virtual space. The 2017 SPAR Grand Prix winner may miss the excitement of live racing on spectator-lined streets but refuses to allow pandemic restrictions to limit her love for the road.
Molotsane, who has represented South Africa on the international stage in track and cross country, has been named SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge ambassador.
The 29-year-old does not only excel on the road, the track, and off-road but is ploughing her experience back into the sport as the recently appointed vice-chairperson of the Athletics SA Athletes’ commission.
Molotsane is an example of what it is to #LiveLimitless, having overcome school bullying to become one of South Africa’s top distance athletes and strong female role models.
“My biggest limit was having the whole class turn their backs on me in Grade 7. I believe that it was bullying on a different level,” said Molotsane.
“I overcame that by understanding that not everyone will be as considerate as you are. I was open to learning and treating experiences as learning curves and not as failures.”
Molotsane is also a strong advocate of menstrual hygiene education and providing young girls with sanitary products at school.
“I believe with all my heart that girls deserve to be in school as much as boys. Young kids often cannot go to school because they are on their periods, and free sanitary towels allow these girls to stay in school and live limitless.”
Molotsane does not only talk the talk but will once again be leading from the front when she lines up for the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge, which will be held on 4 September 2021.
Entries will close on 15 August 2021, and are limited to 75 000 participants.

HRA Updates in June 2021 - N3 South at Town Hill, Cuckoo Lane and Electricity
N3 South Bound at Town Hill
Here is a report prepared under the direction of the HRA Roads Task Team dealing with the necessary upgrade of the alternate route to the N3 south at Town Hill.
The upgrade of the alternate route is being dealt with through detailed discussions with SANRAL in respect of the involvement of all interested and affected parties.
Cuckoo Lane
Representatives of the Task Team have carried out informal inspections of the Cuckoo Lane contract over the last few months. At all stages it was noted that procedures and construction methods have not been carried out in accordance with good engineering practice. The HRA has received specialist geotechnical advice, and a report from local resident and farmer Grant Roodt expressing particular concerns regarding safety and negative ecological impacts. The HRA will submit a detailed technical report with appropriate recommendations to Councillor Pam Passmoor and to the municipality.

In its current condition the road may not be fit for purpose and may be unsafe. Consequences are almost certainly wasted expenditure and an extended period when further will be required.
Electricity Update from Rob Maitland-Stuart
Two out of the three cable sections in each of the two 33kV feeders (A & B) that supply Crossways S/S from Retief S/S in Pmb, have been upgraded from the previous smaller 95mm² 3-core cables to the 630mm² 3 x 1-core equivalent. These upgraded cables are now aligned in terms of power flow capability, to the overhead line sections that were upgraded some 7 – 8 years ago. This is a big step forward in getting our 33kV supply network strengthened and made more reliable. However, I must caution the Hilton residents of a perception doing the rounds on social media, indicating that our supply problems between Retief and Crossways substations are now a thing of the past. This is simply not true. Until the remainder (1.2kM approx.) of the old 95mm² 3-core cables between Retief S/S and Quarry Rd in Pmb are also upgraded to the 630mm² 3 x 1-core equivalent, the situation remains unchanged, as this cable section now becomes the weakest link, i.e., both 33kV feeders (A & B) must be in service to support the Hilton load. Should one of these feeders fail, the other will trip on overcurrent, necessitating the implementation of load reduction in the Hilton area to limit the load on the one 33kV feeder until the fault on the other has been located and repaired.
Furthermore, and resulting from the recent and prolonged outages in the Winterskloof area over the last 7 - 10 days, a meeting has been arranged with the Msunduzi MM and reps from the Electricity Unit to discuss ways of expediting the upgrade of the respective 11kV cables out of Crossways S/S regarding the two feeders concerned. Added to that approach would also be the replacement of the entire 11kV switchboard at Crossways substation itself, following the catastrophic failure of one of the 11kV breakers in the existing switchboard this past Saturday.
Volunteer Recruitment
Your HRA is eager to grow active committee members, any Hilton resident who has the time to volunteer for any of our various portfolios is encouraged to connect with Mike Tarr on 082 568 8246 or Shay Mauck on 082 551 4106.

'Trapped' or 'Living in your head', Positive Purpose Life Coaching measures up
'With all the stress that has come with lockdown and covid we have all become "trapped" in ourselves somewhat. A large amount of people are "living" in their heads and feel underlying stress all the time.Start your day with calm and silence. Good meditation and practice what you are grateful for every morning will set the tone for a calmer day. Choose to be kind and attentive that day. Find time to spend in nature as it is good food for the soul. Ask yourself what difference can I make today and then go and do it. This will contribute to make your day better as well as making the day better for those you come into contact with. Smile as it is definitely contagious and it might just be what the other person needs. So if you feel stressed and would like to implement measures to alleviate this, feel free to contact me and we can explore working together.' shared Marina Miller, Positive Purpose Life Coaching.
