The 2021 National Senior Certificate Results are out and we are celebrating our BEST RESULTS EVER.

All 93 candidates who wrote the IEB National Senior Certificate examinations achieved a Bachelor Degree Certificate pass for university admission.

Lilitha Nkuhlu is included in the IEB list of candidates for Outstanding Achievement for achieving within the top 5% in 6 or more Subjects and a level 7 rating in Life Orientation.

Rosalie Brouckaert and Erin Douglas are included in the IEB list for Commendable Achievements for achieving within the top 5% in 5 or more Subjects and a level 7 rating in Life Orientation.

A total of 22 individual subject results appear in the IEB list of Top 1% of candidates per subject.

Grace College is exceptionally proud of the results attained by its 2021 Matric Pupils; 64 subject A's were earned, with 5 pupils achieving A aggregates in the IEB Examinations. Mary-Beth Wilson, Larissa van Wyk and Isha Ghoorah all attained 7 Subject A's, whilst Cole Baker and Isaac Nichols achieved 6 Subject A's.

Isaac Nichols and Mary-Beth Wilson were both categorised in the top 1% nationally in the IEB Matric examinations for their Mathematical Literacy results.

RABIES VIRUS EDUCATION‼

Rabies can infect any warm-blooded animal.

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease that occurs in more than 150 countries and territories.

Dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans.

40% of people bitten by suspect rabid animals are children under 15 years of age.

There is no cure for rabies, and it is almost always fatal. Once clinical signs occur, an infected animal usually dies within five days.

The only way to test for rabies is by examination of the brain tissue of a dead animal. There is no way to test for rabies infection in a live animal.

An infected animal can only transmit rabies after the onset of clinical signs.

9pm: Post Box Blues Band
The Post Box Blues band began as a jam—an unrehearsed collaboration of musicians with a love for blues music—and eventually got refined, structured, and streamlined into Kyle Baker on guitar and vocal, Daniel Rossouw on bass, and Chris Melling on drums. There is a rawness and vulnerability in a trio, with no wall of sounds to hide behind, just guitar, bass, and drums to carry the message. The Post box blues band like it this way, and try to keep it raw, real, and loud, the way blues should be played! These 3 musicians have been playing together in different projects and iterations for close to 15 years, finally culminating in this bluesy trio playing both blues standards and putting their unique blues twist on more modern music.

8pm: Gerry Van Rensburg
Gerry picked up the guitar for the first time in 1982 with the express purpose of performing to drunk people in bars, a lofty goal which he achieved as a student in 1984, performing at the Saint James Hotel in Point Road, Durban, with three of his friends. It is now an accepted fact that, at the time, nobody in Durban was playing to audiences as drunk as his were. He continued to perform with his bad band friends for his entire student career. By 1989 midi backing tracks became popular and he spent the entire year writing backing tracks and performing them to drunk people at the Cecil hotel in Bloemfontein where he became a big name, but due to the rules of decency on this page we cannot disclose what that name was. He arrived in Pietermaritzburg in 1990 where he would teach technical drawing at Alexandra high school and Maritzburg college. While Gerry is mostly remembered for the many years he performed at DaVinci's restaurant in the ‘90s, over the past 30 years he has performed at restaurants, pubs, weddings, birthdays, and any other venue with a cash bar.

7pm: Grace Botha
Grace Botha is a singer, songwriter and pianist with a passion for amalgamating her love for jazz, pop and folk. She majored in Jazz and Popular Voice at Howard College from 2011-2013 and was a soloist for the close-harmony group the UKZN Voices. In addition to winning the Amsterdam Acoustic Artist challenge in 2012, she was also runner-up in the Gateway to Fame competition 2013 and opened for the SAIFTA awards in a collab at the ICC Durban. She has performed with several top artists including Beatroute, Sebastian Goldswain, and Majozi, and opened for Idols winner Jason Hartman. Grace Botha is an accomplished session artist and has delighted audiences at many different venues in KZN with her witty charm and her incredible voice.

Thousands of swimmers will make a welcome return to Midmar Dam in KwaZulu-Natal as the aQuellé Midmar Mile reverts to its regular slot in the second weekend of February this year.

After a Covid-induced change to the popular event last year, swimmers can expect a more familiar feel to the 2022 edition which will be held from 12-13 February, with the charity events taking place from 10-11 February.

With a star-studded field of swimmers expected to take part, the elite event will be a hugely competitive one, while social swimmers can look forward to the return of the usual fun, social vibe over the weekend.

Race Director Wayne Riddin explained: “We are thrilled that the aQuellé Midmar Mile can go ahead as planned this year. Obviously all Covid protocols will be observed and the event will be run according to the extremely high safety standards that swimmers have come to expect over the years.

“We are thrilled to be welcoming back some big names in open water swimming including our own Olympians for the elite races.

“As usual we will also be hosting the phenomenal charity side of the event which raises millions for good causes across the country each year.”

The names of those in the elite field will be announced shortly. A limited-field elite event was held in 2021 with Michelle Weber and Michael McGlynn emerging as the women’s and men’s winners. The duo then went on to represent the country at the Olympic Games in Tokyo later in the year.

Social swimmers were encouraged to participate in a virtual event last year and will be relishing a return to the dam in 2022.

Also making a return this year is the specific category for disabled swimmers, who will swim on Saturday morning, 12 February. The event for girls 13 and under together with the women 31 and over will take place on Sunday morning, 13 February, with the boys 13 and under and men 31 and over also on Sunday, followed by the rest of the competitive categories. The top-20 seeded swimmers will contest their own elite race on Sunday with the time to be announced shortly.

Swimmers are reminded that the second entry deadline for the aQuellé Midmar Mile is fast approaching on 31 January. For more information on how to enter, event details and deferment of 2021 entries, head to www.midmarmile.co.za

“On the 2nd of January 2022 the KSS Control Room received a UCSI activation of a Toyota Fortuna that had been reported stolen in Kokstad. KSS units started to search the Howick West area for the vehicle where it was located and handed over to Howick SAPS for further investigation”.

“On Monday 10th of January 2022 the KSS Control Room received a UCSI activation of a Golf that had been stolen in Durban North. Through a quick reaction and great communication from KSS and Magma the vehicle was stopped on Main Street (Howick) where the vehicle was recovered and one suspect was apprehended for possession of stolen vehicle”.

9pm: LOST//YOUTH
Lost//Youth are here to save you from the modern noise. The alt/rock band, formed in 2021, brings something new to the table while being reminiscent of bands from before their time. With acoustic elements, epic guitar solos and sincere lyricism, the group delivers a unique and yet nostalgic experience.
With diverse, anti-modern influences such as Foo Fighters, Fleetwood Mac, Tracy Chapman, KALEO and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, their music is hard to define - and that's exactly how they like it. Their upcoming two-part project, playing off the concepts of the light and dark, will help define their sound as malleable and yet inherently distinctive.

Lead singer Alanna Joy brings an amalgamation of fierce and tender elements through her vocal style and tells stories of love, heartbreak and searching for something more. The group's sound is driven by heavy, melodic bass played by Charlie Charles and driving, passionate electric guitar by Faghri Hendricks. Their drummer, Teddy Frazer, solidifies the sound and brings a modern touch to the rock rhythms played.

8pm: KRISTEN
Kristen is a KZN-born musician who started her solo career in Observatory, Cape Town, in 2017. She performed in and around Cape Town for two years before relocating to her hometown, Pietermaritzburg, where she founded and lead the Midlands-based band, Cactus Club.

In 2020 Kristen made the decision to focus on her solo work amidst the challenge of the pandemic and is currently finalizing the release of her first single.

7pm: WEBSTER FAMILY BAND
Music is a bit like breathing in the Webster family. Dad (Charles) started music as a young child. He and wife Tarrin have passed the genes on to daughters (Rachael and Rebecca) and son (Michael). Deeply rooted in the KZN Midlands music scene through, the family members also perform in various band incarnations as Bowstring, Hereditary and in other collaborations like Blackbird and Fill the Blank. The familial affection brings a special feel to the folk-pop-rock music that the Webster family typically plays - in acoustic style, with plenty of harmony and rhythm.
