Rerouting Arts and JOMBA! come back to the Midlands - 2 September at 7pm

For one night only, Midlands audiences will be able to experience international dance artists from Romania and Madagascar, performing right on our doorstep. Presented by Rerouting Arts in partnership with UKZN’s Centre for Creative Arts and its 25th JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, Ramanenjana will be showcased at the St Anne’s College Theatre on Saturday, 2 September at 7pm.

Ramanenjana is a docufiction performance about a dance that made history. In Malagasy, Ramanenjana means something that makes you rigid but also something that makes you strong. Amidst diseases, social unrest, and healing rituals, the show critically discusses several versions of the same mass dance event.

Following several years of research, Ramanenjana examines dance's societal role and how colonialism may have spread misconceptions about an extraordinary movement. Collaborating with ethnomusicologist and musician Olombelo Ricky, choreographers Simona Deaconescu and Gaby Saranouffi, along with three performers, playfully explore the Ramanenjana phenomenon using historical texts, dynamic hand gestures, and ecstatic movement.

This JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience is the 25th celebration of this stalwart KZN festival. The curatorial provocation, “(in)tangible heritages” has created space for artists to interrogate dance offerings that negotiate the intersectional personal and political paths that have allowed critical dance makers to arrive at this place.

Tegan Peacock, founder of Rerouting Arts, says, “We feel privileged to again be partnering with JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience to bring an evening of dance to Midlands audiences. Hosting visiting artists on our local stomping ground offers a unique opportunity to watch and engage with the global arts scene and experience a world of dance that sometimes seems removed from our daily life."

“This important relationship with Rerouting Arts, now in its second year, allows the festival to reach out to new audiences in a most accessible way,” enthuses Lliane Loots, curator and Artistic Director of JOMBA! “Contemporary dance is often seen as inaccessible to the uninitiated. Inkjet or laser? The time for a new printer has arrived, but with so many options to choose from, even the experienced buyer might feel overwhelmed. The first question you must ask yourself, before being distracted by all the fancy features printers come with these days, is whether you want to buy an inkjet printer or a laser printer?

 

 

Firstly, let’s establish the primary difference between an inkjet and a laser printer. An inkjet printer uses spots of liquid ink dropped onto the paper to create a digital image, while a laser printer uses a toner cartridge filled with fine powder that is electrically charged and then bonded to the paper using heat. Knowing how each one works, and what their strengths and weaknesses are, is the first step to deciding which one to buy.

 

 

What will the printer be used for: Inkjet printers are a good choice for the home or small businesses that don’t need to print large quantities. They are also the best choice for printing high-quality images and photographs. The laser printer is best for printing high volume black and white documents.

 

Print quality: While advancements have been made with both types of printer, they are generally considered to have different strengths when it comes to print quality. Inkjet printers are usually the preferred choice when it comes to printing photographs, as the result is better toned and more natural. While laser printers excel in producing perfect, sharp black text and colour graphics.

Print speed and volume: Laser printers are designed to print at a fast rate, producing a high volume of prints, and can print up to seventy pages per minute. Inkjet printers, traditionally, print at a slower rate, however, advancements in technology have seen inkjet printers with the capacity to print as fast as laser printers. Laser printers, however, are quicker to start up and can print immediately, while inkjet printers take longer to get going initially.

 

Cost: Inkjet printers are considered initially as the cheaper option to buy, while laser printers start off at a higher cost, although laser printers are seen to have a longer lifespan. However, the costs continue with the replacement of inks and toners. Ink cartridges in inkjet printers need to be replaced more frequently than toner in laser printers, which can print a significantly larger number of pages. An additional cost that may need to be considered with a laser printer, is replacing the drum unit that transfers the toner powder onto the paper.

 

When making your decision between an inkjet printer and a laser printer, you need to weigh up the pros and cons of each printer. While inkjet printers may be smaller and cheaper, it may not produce sharp quality text documents at high volumes, and the paper trays have lower capacities than laser printers, which could be frustrating for the high volume user. On the other hand, however, laser printers are more expensive but have a lower cost per page, but are not as suitable for printing complex graphics as inkjet printers.

 

The key to deciding which printer to buy lies in its use. Once you’ve decided what you want to use it for and how much you will be printing, your choice will be much easier. The Sound of Drowning, a compelling, insightful, and gently inspiring short documentary about women and their journey from addiction to recovery, directed by Durban filmmaker, Tami Jacobs is available to view free online on YouTube during Women’s Month.

The film is a quiet homage to the brave journey of eight women from the ages of 19 to 69 years -mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts - from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, who have found and are living in recovery from active addiction. By amplifying the voices of these resilient women who triumphed over challenges around addiction whether it be alcohol, street drugs, or psychiatric medications, the filmmakers hope to encourage women to step forward and seek help if needed.

Produced by Jacobs and Anél Sherren, an Addictions Counsellor, who also features in the film, The Sound of Drowning offers insights into the transformative power of unity through community that is found within the recovery process and sheds some light on what it takes to get better and what happened to them when they eventually reached out for help.

Jacobs, who is herself an addict in recovery explains what inspired her to create the film: “I lived in active addiction for 15 years before finding recovery and I know from my personal experience that it’s an extremely painful place to be.”

“I was constantly depressed and suicide was a constant risk for me. When I found recovery, together with my sponsor and co-producer Anél, we noticed that the number of women who seek treatment and also manage to stay in recovery is drastically less than the number of men. Anel has a lot of insight into the disease of addiction and we decided that together, we could do something about it. We first wanted to find out why women don’t seek help and next, we wanted to send out a message of hope to any women suffering from the disease of addiction, that there is help available, and there are many people that can support them.”

“The purpose of the documentary was to lift the lid off the stigma women face when attempting to get help for their addiction,” says co-producer Anél Sherren. “There is such disproportion between the number of men and women coming in for help -we wanted to break this view so that women could feel safe asking for help and entering into treatment. We hope that this gentle message from these incredible women in this film will help motivate women to step forward.”

The United States Supreme Court’s decision to ban affirmative action in college admissions has raised red flags for universities and prospective students across the globe. Predictions are that the decision will heavily impact racial diversity in US universities. For South African, and other international students hoping to apply to the US, the decision is unlikely to have a significant impact – they will still have to work twice as hard as other applicants, to stand out to admissions officers.

“South African students have historically faced challenges when it comes to applying to universities in the US because of geography, not race. The Supreme Court’s decision, while notable, is not expected to impact this. Regardless of race, local students will still have to put significant time and effort into their academics and overall application if they want to gain admission,” says Rebecca Pretorius, Regional Manager of Crimson Education, a global admission advisory that helps students prepare their applications to top universities abroad.

Affirmative action, often referred to as “race-conscious admissions” in the higher education sphere, allows universities to consider a student’s race in the admissions process, with the goal of creating a diverse student body that enriches the educational experiences of all students. “Until now, more than 40% of American universities, and 60% of selective schools have considered race to some extent when making admissions decisions, according to documents filed in court by Harvard,” says Pretorius.

US universities receive millions of applications every year, and competition is stiff. For international students, like South Africans hoping to gain admission, the highly competitive and holistic admission process takes into account academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, leadership qualities, letters of recommendation, and personal essays. With historically low acceptance rates across the board, students need to display exemplary performance in every category.

“Harvard’s acceptance rate in 2022/2023 was 3.1%. Stanford’s acceptance rate hit an all-time low of under 3.8%, with just over 2 000 students being accepted, out of over 56 000 applicants. The majority of these coveted spots go to students from the United States. To be one of the few international students who stand out, local students must focus on curating a strong application portfolio, that not only highlights academic and extra-curricular strengths, but also tells a compelling story about who they are and what they can bring to the university,” says Pretorius.

In the Supreme Court ruling, nothing prohibits universities from considering how race or other adversities have affected an applicant's life. This means that students could provide concrete examples of how challenges like racial discrimination, lack of financial means, the area they grew up in, or the school they attended has affected them – as long as it is directly linked to how they can contribute to the university.

“We’ll only be able to navigate the full effects of this decision over time. At Crimson, we will be monitoring any changes that do take effect, to continue giving our students the best advice and guidance in their application journeys,” says Pretorius.

Long-time friends, collaborators and leading exponents of the acoustic guitar scene in South Africa, Derek Gripper and Guy Buttery are coming to the KZN Midlands for a one off concert. After their last concert together at the legendary Freight & Salvage in San Francisco, California, this will be their first official performance together as a duo in KwaZulu-Natal.

Derek Gripper is known for his groundbreaking technique for evoking the West African kora on the guitar. He has transcribed the complex music of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and infuses his interpretations of Bach’s music with lessons from the oral traditions of Africa. He has performed with Toumani Diabaté’s Symmetric Orchestra and classical guitar legend John Williams, and tours worldwide.It took Derek Gripper untold hours of painstaking work to transcribe note-for-note the complex compositions of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and find a way of playing them on six-string guitar. The results appeared on his ninth album, “One Night on Earth”. The album created an unprecedented meeting point between the written tradition of Western classical music and the oral tradition of the West African griots.

“Guy Buttery is something of a National treasure”, says South Africa’s leading newspaper The Mercury. As an internationally recognised musician, this multi-instrumentalist enjoys invitations to play sell-out performances all over the globe. The USA, UK, Australia, France, Brazil, and Italy have all welcomed him back year after year. However, to simply label Guy Buttery as one of South Africa’s musical phenoms would be an injustice. His international role has surpassed merely performing concerts to foreign audiences. It has evolved into one as an ambassador of South African music, inspiring people across the world with his homegrown style at the very heart of his talent and tenacity. Guy’s distinct unification of South African guitar music is the musical advocate for everything positive and beautiful about the place he calls home.

The duo came together in an official recording for what was their first release in a live improvised concert captured in Cape Town. First heard as an exclusive premiere on NPR's "New Sounds" radio show in New York, the SAMA nominated album “Live in Cape Town” is something of a melting pot of South African and Eastern influences crafted by two of the finest visionaries to emerge from the tip of the continent in decades.

Female DJ Lucy Lu, famously known in the entertainment circles, is making impressive moves in the industry. It is also noteworthy to hear that a DJ of her calibre is interested in giving back to the community.

Born Lusanda Palesa Nzama, Lucy Lu hails from Sobantu in Pietermaritzburg. From humble beginnings, she forged her way into the music industry in the City of Choice as a “groovist” at first, then progressed to being a DJ. She has always been a house music fanatic but connected more with Afro House and Afro Tech. In 2020, before the COVID Level 5 Lockdown, her passion for music prompted her to ask two local DJs in her community (DJ Yaandah and Lummy) to teach her how to DJ.

A prominent DJ, locally, Lucy Lu has entertained guests at numerous events hosted by local promoters, event organisers and big festivals in the city and beyond, specializing in mixing and blending tracks to create a seamless and dynamic flow of music. These include Anywhere In Your City which was hosted in Durban by DJ Merlon and Enoo Napa, Last Dance Music Experience, Duzi Live events, and other events hosted by the notorious Spike Notion, uMgungundlovu Music Festival, All Varsities Social Picnic, Midlands Winter Xperience and other monthly events in the city. She has also played at numerous establishments locally such as Cubana Maritzburg, Sprytz Premium Lounge, Ora Restobar, Rotunda Beach Restaurant and Bar, and other local entertainment venues around the city. She has played at Luma Sunsets, The Villa, Newscafe, Lime Rooftop, and Empire Café in Durban. This versatile DJ has also been booked for corporate events hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture and Umgeni Water.

“I did not think my journey would take off so quickly, playing in the biggest festivals in my hometown and Durban. I work very hard, but honestly, I feel like everything is just falling into place so easily because my time to shine has come. I prepared and positioned myself well before I even became a DJ, building good relations with people in the industry. It is making my life so much easier right now. My goal is to see myself on international stages, flying the Pietermaritzburg flag”.

Beyond her musical talent, Lucy Lu has a registered NPO called Ubuntu eSobantu Community Initiative which was founded in 2015. The officially registered NPO collaborates with other graduates in her community to achieve the objectives of the NPO, which include empowerment and development programmes aimed at the youth of Sobantu. As a graduate herself, Lucy Lu has a strong focus on the Career Guidance Talk programme as the NPO’s focus is education.

Lusanda is very passionate when it comes to education. Her strong leadership has produced so many successful educational initiatives that the NPO strikes to achieve. She is determined, innovative and takes interest in seeing the youth in our community obtain better education and other opportunities - Sinegugu Khumalo

Currently, Lucy Lu entertains where she is booked at, including FameUs Brands events which is Dogg Dbn’s company. She is also a resident DJ for the Beach Experience at Rotunda Beach Restaurant and Bar in Cedara. She has recently bagged a partnership with FCR Fleet Solutions which acts as her official driving partner and ensures she gets to and from events safely. She is hopeful her brand will attract more companies that she can work with in future to further elevate her brand as well as local brands. Lucy Lu also bagged a residency on Gagasi Fm for the month of August. Her mixes will be played every Friday at 17:05pm. She has released her first Single titled Mam’ncane featuring Afro wizards and Section 5, which is available on digital stores. She is also working on her EP which will be released before the end of the year.

Running an entirely individual race, young Tayla Kavanagh owned the Maritzburg SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge that took place in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 20 August.

Leading from the start to finish with a gun-to-tape dash, the 22 year old running for Hollywood Athletics Club, finished her 10km challenge in a time of 34.07. Kavanagh had a decent lead of 1 minute and 14 seconds to second place Jenet Mbhele, who finished in 35.21. A delighted third place Makhosi Mhlongo crossed 3 minutes and 21 seconds behind Kavanagh, in a time of 37.28.

A fresh looking Kavanagh, who resides in Hillcrest started after her run, “I had a good run, the course was undulating which suit me. The actual race was tough as I ran completely solo from the start. There was no one to help push me but it was a good test for me demanding my focus on keeping up my pace”

The leading lady’s next race will be in two weeks’ time when she will be hitting the streets of Durban for her home club’s race, the Hollywoodbets 10km run. Thereafter, the budding athlete will be heading to the 5km World Champs in Riga, Latvia running around the Baltic city on 1 October. This will be her second international race, having a Hollywood dream build up to her second global race, the determined star finished second in the recent Totalsports Women’s Race held in Durban recently, in a time of 33.44. Her first international race was in Germany last year where she took part in the Race 2 Records 10km run.

“I really would love to run a fast time in Riga, even a personal best would be great.” Talking about her personal best, the trail blazer has a 32.10 best run that she set in 2021 at the SA Champs for 10km.

Both second-place Mbhele and third-place Mhlongo will be heading east where they will both be competing in the gruelling 50km World Champs in Hyderabad, India later this year. 28 year old Mbhele from Umzimkulu ran in the Comrades earlier this year where she finished tenth overall.

A completely sold-out field of 3,100 ladies tackled the course, starting in a gorgeous mystical mist that enveloped Alexandra Park area before the clouds lifted and burnt off, and the day warmed up to a gorgeous sunny morning.

CHOC House in Pietermaritzburg, the race charity for the event, were awarded a cheque of R20,000, with R5 from each entry being donated to them.

7pm: Howick High Band

Led by their charismatic and eccentric teacher, Mark Houston, the Howick High School Band never disappoints. Come and check out the Midlands’ young talent! The band is excited to be back at MiTH once again, to play a collection of pop and rock classics from The Foo Fighters, and Bruce Springsteen, to the White Stripes and everything in between. Who knows, there might even be some Iron Maiden...

8pm: Woodgate

Woodgate is a four-piece alternative indie rock band from Pietermaritzburg, started in July this year. The band consists of Josh Gilliver on drums, James Cunningham on bass guitar, Joshua Strydom on guitar, and Ryan Woodgate on guitar and vocals. The band plays original songs written by Ryan Woodgate, some of which have already been part of his solo releases, and others that the band has created together. In addition, the band plays cover songs from a range of artists and genres, including rock, indie, alternative, and pop. Influences of the band are many, including the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Cage The Elephant and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Ryan Woodgate and Josh Gilliver have played together before as part of local rock band “Calico” who gigged throughout KZN between 2017 and 2021. Joshua Strydom and James Cunningham are also experienced musicians; Joshua being part of the MMM band and James being part of Static Cat. Woodgate will be playing their debut gig at MiTH and taking the local music scene by storm with a blend of exciting originals and well-known, foot-tapping covers.

9pm: Serrotone

Serrotone is an exciting collaboration project initiated by two established SA radio play artists: Pete Guthrie (Spoonfeedas) and James Robertson (Cubic Inch), and Billy Kruger. Guthrie and Robertson have both written and performed as part of Spoonfeedas, a multi-charting SA group. Robertson’s band, Cubic Inch, has also enjoyed radio popularity, and between them, they have performed alongside artists like Metallica, Muse, Ronan Keating, and Bryan Adams. Kruger has performed in Europe with MIC at Holland’s Ajax stadium, also having shared the stage with UK band Delirious. Serrotone has further performed with some of South Africa’s finest acts, sharing the stage with Prime Circle and Wonderboom in Plettenburg Bay, and then Freshly Ground at the Inverroche Summer Series in Stilbaai. They have individually and collectively released multiple singles which have achieved radio play and gained popularity at live performances. We can't wait to have them back at MiTH.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: MiTH takes place every second Wednesday at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm, Knoll Drive, Hilton. Doors open at 6pm and the music will kick off at 7pm. Entrance is R50 at the door. Food and soft drinks are available for sale. A cash bar is available.

DIRECTIONS TO MiTH: Take the N3 to Hilton, take the Hilton turnoff and go South into the Village (away from Hilton College). Travel 5,2km along Hilton Avenue (past two sets of traffic lights and Crossways Pub) and keep going straight as Hilton Avenue turns into Dennis Shepstone Drive. At the 5,2km mark, Knoll Drive will be on your right – the entrance to MiTH is the *second* entrance on your left into The Knoll Historic Guest Farm.

Our Cowan Cubs have been learning about Transport. The Grade RR children had a bus ride to the Hilton Train Station where they could freely explore the beautiful old trains. Climbing, balancing, pushing and exploring were all part of our adventure. We ended off our outing with ice lollies on the grassed area at The Quarry shopping centre. We returned to school with happy hearts and many stories of which train each child would like to drive.
