Entries for the 54th aQuellé Midmar Mile have officially opened, with organisers anticipating another memorable edition of the world's largest open-water swimming event from 11-14 February 2027.
The 2026 event attracted more than 11,000 swimmers and raised an impressive R2,7 million for various charities. Organisers are expecting another strong turnout in 2027 as thousands of swimmers of all ages and abilities descend on Midmar Dam in KwaZulu-Natal.
Among those already confirming their participation is 1977 champion Paul Blackbeard. Now based in Australia, Blackbeard returned to
Midmar Dam for the race's landmark 50th edition in 2023, where he won the men's 61-70 age category in a time of 21:06.
Now 68, Blackbeard enjoyed a distinguished competitive career that included nine South African titles, numerous national records, and a world championship in surf lifesaving, among many other accolades. He remains a force in masters swimming, most recently winning 13 gold, five silver and two bronze medals at the Masters Swimming Australia National Championships.
Despite his success around the world, Blackbeard continues to relish the opportunity to return to the race that played such a big part in his swimming journey.
Race Director Wayne Riddin, himself a former aQuellé Midmar Mile champion, said the event's enduring appeal lies in its unique ability to bring together generations of swimmers.
"The aQuellé Midmar Mile is a unique event that continues to connect people from all walks of life – from elite swimmers to those venturing into the dam for the first time,” said Riddin.
“Seeing past champions like Paul returning again, nearly 50 years after their victories, is incredibly special and highlights the lasting impact this event has on so many lives.
“We look forward to welcoming swimmers from across South Africa and around the world back to Midmar in February 2027."
Swimmers eager to secure their place on the start line can take advantage of the discounted early-bird entry fee of R329, which will be available until 29 July 2026.
