‘Small Mercies’ is one of our set novels this year and Grade 6s have enjoyed the book and related well to the characters, especially Mercy, who is the 11 year old protagonist of the story. Bridget lives in Hilton, and her book is set in Pietermaritzburg, so we had the privilege of chatting to, and interviewing, a South African author. ‘Small Mercies’ has received numerous awards, including the Kirkus literary award of ‘one of the best books of 2020’.Bridget shared tips on writing, as well as the history, background and characters in ‘Small Mercies’. Grade 6s enjoyed asking a multitude of questions and could have spent more than an hour sharing their viewpoints and learning from a wonderful writer. We already have a copy in the library of Bridget’s new book ‘The Cedarville Shop and the Wheelbarrow Swap’ which Grade 6s can’t wait to read!
A warm thank you to Bridget Krone who so willingly gave of her time to connect with Cowan House readers.
