When you hear the term “arthritis,” chances are you think of your grandma’s joint pain. But did you know that more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions exist? While people of all ages, races and sexes can live with arthritis, it’s prevalent among women and older people. Common arthritis symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness, and diminished range of motion in joints. Severe arthritis can even result in chronic pain and difficulty performing daily activities. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common types of this joint disease.Osteoarthritis, by far the most common, can damage almost any joint but mainly occurs in the hands, spine, hips and knees. Bones in affected joints become weaker, the connective tissue that holds the joint together deteriorates and inflammation damages the joint lining.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue, including joints. In severe cases, it attacks internal organs.
While no cure for arthritis exists, various treatment options are available to reduce symptoms, preserve joint function and improve quality of life.
