Towards the end of 2020, a Social Justice writing competition was held by the South African Schools’ Debating Board and The Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender (University of Pretoria). Entries took the form of short stories, opinion pieces, essays and poems.Our congratulations go to Grade 10 Student, Lehakoe Tserane, who has been selected as one of 30 students whose entries will be published in a book by the University.

Bamemeza
“siyeke! siyeke!”
but no one seemed to listen.
They chanted
“enough is enough”
But everyone turned a blind eye.
Babuza
“Am I next, Am I next?”
but society was silent.
The whole world covered by the pernicious
masculinity.
A women’s life was deprived
all she ever wanted was to stay alive.
I could see it in her eyes
that she was not ready to die.
