Hilton boys through the years have been very conscious about giving to those in need and noteworthy causes, and hence, it was a fine gesture when Guy Waterhouse (Grade 9) recently won a competition and he generously gave his winnings of R2500 worth of stationery to two Vula Projects namely Gateway School and PROTEC.
Andrew Paterson, was so incensed by the many grotesque scenarios, the unbearable pain of numerous calves left motherless – let alone the pain of the slaughtered – he hit on the brilliant idea of Rhinoses.
With the generous support and technical expertise of the Polyoak Packaging Group in Cape Town, he designed and manufactured the Rhinose in South Africa – a bright red, recyclable plastic rhino 'horn' made from recycled material, to be displayed as 'Rhinoses' on the front of motor cars by the South African public equally sickened by the cruelty. And so, by starting the Rhinose Foundation, a non-profit trust, and claiming that, due to the daily slaughter, 'Every day is Rhinose Day', the Foundation is fulfilling a dream to help stop the killing. CNA is one of the proud sponsors of the foundation.
One of the initiatives for the foundation was to create a writing competition to raise awareness. Guy entered the competition. The competition was to write a children's book on a young rhino affected by poaching and his progression through the years. I was lucky enough to win the 14+ category with my book "The Long Flight to Freedom." Winning an I-Pad and a gift card worth R2500 to CNA for stationery to donate to a school/s of his choice.
Well done to Guy on winning the competition and more importantly in giving so generously.
