The Grade 6 classes at Laddsworth Primary in Hilton recently participated in an innovative learning and teaching programme: their own version of the popular television food series, MasterChef SA.
The purpose of the programme was to show the importance of following instructions through hands-on practical application. It also taught pupils why instructions are important. The project culminated in cooking with wheat in a MasterChef Laddsworth cook-off competition. The Grade 6 teachers said: "It is an on-going project that allows the learners to gain valuable life lessons while at the same time having fun."
In the finals last week, nine finalists had to produce a starter using wheat, cheese, onion and peppers plus any other ingredients they chose, in a recipe of their choosing. The panel of three judges said that they found it difficult to choose winners. The judges were Greg Downs from Hilton Spar; Laddsworth isiZulu teacher, Sihle Nxumalo, and professional chef and owner of Cookalooks, Catherine Da Costa.
In the final cook-off, Brandon Merrington came third with stuffed chicken, Scott Butler's three-way samoosas were placed second and Laiken Austen's croissant with fillet steak and onion marmalade won her the coveted Flaming Apron award for 2013.
Leah Kriel won the semi-finalists' egg whipping challenge, and Gugu Gwamanda was the champion potato peeler.
